Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Persistent Bison Defeat Phoenix in OT

Chambersburg, Pa.- In their final home game of the season the Wilson College Women's Basketball Team (10-14, 5-10 NEAC) fell to Gallaudet (11-13, 8-7 NEAC) on Wednesday night. Despite a late run to force the game to overtime the Phoenix came up short in the extra period falling to a final score of 76-78.

How it Happened: After an even start to the opening quarter an assist by junior Jasmine Wallace (Detroit, MI) from junior Amber Watkins (Honesdale, Pa), took the Phoenix out to an early 11-6 lead. That would prove to be the Phoenix's largest lead of the game as the Bison clawed their way back to lead 18-16 at the end of the first quarter. The second started well for the visiting Bison who extended their lead to nine before a pair of free throws by junior Lindsey Purvis (Fort Myers, Fl) and a strong offensive rebound and put-back by Wallace reduced the lead to just five mid-way through the quarter. The teams continued to trade baskets until the end of the second when a steal at mid-court and an assist by junior Ashley Henderson (Upper Marlboro, Md.) for sophomore Kristen Burdo (Norristown, Pa.) ensured the Phoenix went into half-time within touching distance at 28-37.

The Phoenix continued to hold the Bison to a single digit lead throughout the third highlighted by an impressive steal by Wallace which led to an easy lay-up on the fast-break. She was not playing a lone hand with Henderson putting up 7 straight Phoenix points, including a three, to keep Gallaudet's lead at 44-53 going into the final period of regulation.

The game felt as though it was slipping away from the Phoenix with the Bison extending their lead to 10 with just 8 minutes remaining. This was when the Phoenix caught fire with an 11-0 run, senior Amber Jones (Waldorf, Md.)  contributing an important 5 points over that stretch in her final Wilson home game. Henderson's jumper gave the Phoenix their first lead since the opening quarter but the Bison pushed again, mounting their own run to take their lead back out to 5 with just 1:30 remaining. The Phoenix refused to fold and on the back of a steal and two converted free-throws by Wallace, along with another pair from the charity stripe by Henderson, found themselves in the lead again. After another jumper and free throw by the Bison, Wallace again found herself at the line needing to sink both shots to force the game to overtime, a task she coolly accomplished.

The Phoenix started the extra period well with Burdo and Purvis grabbing consecutive offensive rebounds and converting the put-backs to get the Phoenix out to an early 4 point lead. The Phoenix could not keep up the pace however and Gallaudet finished stronger, running out 78-76 winners after OT.

Inside the Box Score: Wallace was the Phoenix leading scorer with 18 points shooting an impressive 8-11 from the free throw line in some clutch spots. Henderson chipped in with 16 points of her own along with 3 assists and a pair of threes. Burdo and Purvis both had double digits rebounding, however the Bison did edge the battle on the boards with 57 rebounds to Wilson's 52. The Bison's first half edge on the scoreboard can be seen in the field goal percentages at 40% compared to the Phoenix at 27.27% in the first half.

Up Next: The Phoenix close their season on the road in New Jersey at the College of Saint Elizabeth on Saturday at 2pm.
