Phoenix Close Out Season Versus Eagles


Morristown, NJ. - The Wilson College women's basketball team closed out the best season for the program since the 2000-01 season this afternoon at the College of Saint Elizabeth. Despite a solid effort, the Phoenix (10-15, 5-11 NEAC) fell to the Eagles ( 8-16, 5-11 NEAC) by a final score of 48-43.

How It Happened: It was a tight battle all afternoon as the Phoenix claimed the early 6-2 lead on back-to-back buckets from juniors Lindsey Purvis (Fort Myers, Fl, South Fort Myers) and Jasmine Wallace (Detroit, MI, Bladensburg (Md.)). The Phoenix held the lead for the whole first quarter until the Eagles hit a late bucket to win the quarter 10-9. With the game knotted at 13-13, the Eagles went on a 6-0 run, but a jumper just before the half by junior Ashley Henderson (Upper Marlboro, Md., North Point)  pulled the Phoenix within 19-15 at halftime. The third quarter went back and forth with neither team able to pull away fro the other, yet a hoop at the buzzer for the eagles pushed their lead to 7 points at 34-27. Midway through the fourth quarter the Eagles used a 7-0 run to take their largest lead of the game at 43-31. A pair of free-throws and then a steal and fast-break layup by Wallace pulled the Phoenix within 8 points at 43-35. Trailing by 9 points with just over two minutes to got a another pair of free-throws by Wallace, a layup from Purvis, and then a rebound and finish by Wallace with an assist from Henderson to pull within 44-41 with with 30 seconds remaining. The Phoenix had to foul to extend the game and even though the Eagles missed both free-throws they were able to corral the offensive rebound leading to another opportunity at the charity stripe. This time the Eagles sank both shots to extend the lead to 5 points, but again Wallace scored to get within 3 points with 14 seconds to go. The Eagles would get another chance to put the game away at the free-throw line and this time converted to put the game away.

Inside the Box Score: Wallace led the Phoenix with 18 points while Purvis added 12 points and 6 rebounds. Junior Amber Watkins (Honesdale, Pa, Honesdale) led the team with 9 boards. The Phoenix held a 28-20 advantage in points int he paint, but the Eagles claimed a 16-6 edge in points off turnovers.
