Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Phoenix Fend off Nittany Lions

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Wilson College women's basketball team (10-13, 5-9 NEAC) took on NEAC opponent Penn State Berks this afternoon. While the Phoenix lost to the Nittany Lions (9-11, 7-8 NEAC) earlier this season, the Phoenix come out on top today 76-74.

How It Happened: The Phoenix flew past their opponents in the first quarter. Junior Lindsey Purvis (Fort Myers, Fl) was first to add points to the score board with a lay-up. Then junior Jasmine Wallace (Detroit, MI) denied a jumper from Deanna Dadonna of the Nittany Lions. The Phoenix made the score 5-3 early on with a three-pointer from junior Ashley Henderson (Upper Marlboro, Md.). Freshman Michaela Singer (Annville, Pa.) subbed in with about five minutes left in the quarter and went straight to work. She stole the ball and took it to the net for a fast break lay up and then went down the court again--this time she landed a jump shot. Before the quarter was over, Singer scored a three-pointer to add even more points to the Phoenix tally. Singer started things off for the Phoenix in the second quarter, too, and then Henderson stepped in with a jumper. After that, Henderson landed a three-pointer assisted by Singer. Before the Nittany Lions could score again, Purvis stole the ball and scored a bucket. Junior Amber Watkins (Honesdale, Pa) then scored on a fast break after Wallace made a crucial defensive rebound, putting the Phoenix in the lead by 20 with a score of 33-13. They maintained a 20 point lead to wrap up the half 41-21.

The Nittany Lions started to turn things around in the third period. They outscored the Phoenix 23-16. Wallace stole the ball again, and this time she passed it off to Purvis for a lay up. The Phoenix increased their lead to a 28 point advantage as Henderson landed a three-point bucket. Henderson kept at it, and she scored on a fast break after Watkins stole the ball and fed it to her up court. Still, the Nittany Lions started to chip away at The Phoenix's lead. The third quarter ended 57-44 with the Phoenix up by 13. The Nittany Lions out scored the Phoenix again in the fourth quarter, this time it was 30-19. With just 42 seconds left in the game the Nittany Lions had closed the Phoenix's advantage down drastically. They trailed the hosting team by only 4 with a score of 70-74. Henderson sank two free throws to give the Phoenix 76 points on the scoreboard. Berks scored once more before the buzzer, but the Phoenix stayed on top with a final score of 76-74.

Inside the Box Score: Henderson led her team in scoring this afternoon as she recorded a career high 30 points. Two other Phoenix had double digits in the points column tonight including Wallace with 17 and Purvis with 12. The Nittany Lions made 40.9% of their field goals this afternoon. Their shooting improved radically from the first half when they shot 21.88% to the second half as they made 58.82% of their shots. The Phoenix shot better in the first half than in the second, but overall they made almost 44% of their shots.
