Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Phoenix Pull Away Late to Beat Blue Jays

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.- The Phoenix men's basketball team hosted the Blue Jays of Elizabethtown College this evening in a non-conference. The game was the final contest for Wilson before entering winter break. The Phoenix (4-9, 1-1 CSAC) pulled away late from the Blue Jays (4-6, 0-1 Landmark) to win 74-61.

How It Happened: Wilson jumped out to a quick 10-4 lead as senior Zachary Powell (Manassas, Va., Osbourn) came out on fire scoring 6 of the 10 points for the Phoenix. The Blue Jays wouldn't be held in check for long, battling their way back into the game and taking a 14-13 lead with just under 10 minutes to play. The next five minutes of play consisted of both teams trading buckets and the Phoenix retaking the lead with around five minutes to play. Up 24-19, freshman Adrian Thomas (Germantown, Md., Northwest HS) scored on back-to-back layups to stretch the Phoenix lead to seven. The Blue Jays answered with a bucket of their own but Thomas hit another jumper that was followed by a Diven Wallington (Clarksburg Md., Clarksburg HS) layup. E-Town scored before the end of the half but Wilson led 32-26 at the end of the period.

Wilson extended their lead to ten to start the second half but the Blue Jays responded and cut the lead back to six. Leading 38-32 with 14 minutes remaining, the Phoenix began to push their advantage back up to double-digits. Senior Ian Frazier (Palmyra, Pa., Palmyra) knocked down a three and Zachary Powell followed with a layup to give the Phoenix an eleven point cushion.  Trailing 45-34, Elizabethtown started to chip away at the Wilson lead. A quick 7-0 scoring spurt by the Blue Jays made the score 45-41 in favor of the Phoenix. Wilson led 54-48 at the 6:03 mark before E-Town nailed a pair of three-pointers to tie the game. The Phoenix shut down the Blue Jays' momentum by scoring six straight points and taking a 60-54 lead with under 4 minutes to play. A few possessions later, Keion Adams (Gaithersburg, Md., Seneca Valley) drilled a huge three-pointer to give his team a late 65-58 lead. The game came down to whether or not the Phoenix could convert on their free throws down the stretch, and in the last minute they hit 5 of 6 from the line and pulled away with a 74-61 victory.

Inside the Box Score: A key difference in the game came at the foul line as the Phoenix had 22 more free throw attempts than the Blue Jays. Wilson shot 23-34 (68%) from the line and 38% from the field. Zachary Powell led both teams with 16 points and went 6-6 from the free-throw line. Keion Adams notched a double-double with 13 points and 11 boards. Rashaan Bean added 13 points and 9 rebounds as well.

Up Next: Wilson will have some time off before returning home on January 5 to host the Centenary University Cyclones. The game is scheduled to start at 3:00 p.m.
