Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Frantic Final Seconds Leads To Phoenix Victory

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.- The Wilson College women's basketball team hosted Hollins University tonight in a nonconference matchup. The Phoenix (4-5, 1-2) defeated Hollins (3-7, 0-4 ODAC) by a score of 56-55 after a thrilling last few moments of the game.

How It Happened: Hollins would start the night off by hitting a three-pointer and jumping out to an early 7-2 lead. Senior Kai Wyatt (Catonsville, MD, Md Acad Tech & Hlth Sci) would hit a huge three of her own that would end the Hollins run and help spark the Wilson offense. The two teams would battle throughout until Wilson would start on an 11-3 run to end the first quarter, bringing the score to 22-18 in favor of the Phoenix. Wyatt and senior Lindsey Purvis (Fort Myers, Fl, South Fort Myers) would score 20 of the Phoenix 22 points. The second quarter would open up with more offense from Wilson as they would start the quarter with 5-0 run. Freshman Tioleaoauli Posiulai (Waipahu, Hawaii, University Laboratory School) would lead the Phoenix with 4 points in the quarter. Hollins would call a timeout, compose themselves, and close out the first-half on a 9-0 run that would even our score at halftime, 27-27.

In the third quarter, both teams battle back and fourth with neither one being able to control the lead for very long. The Phoenix were able to jump out to a six point lead but Hollins would quickly narrowed the gap and evened the game up at 37. The two teams would enter the fourth quarter tied at 43. Hollins would open the quarter with a shot behind the three-point arc to give them the slight lead. It wouldn't last long as Wilson stormed right back and tied the game up at 52 a piece with a minute and a half left. Hollins would advance down the court and take a shot from three point land but could not connect and turned the ball over to the Phoenix. On the ensuing possession, Kai Wyatt  would drive to the hoop and kick the ball out to the corner of the low post where freshman Princess Frazier-Lyles (Montgomery Village, Md, Watkins Mill) was waiting and would drain the go-ahead bucket with forty seconds reaming in the game, giving Wilson the slight advantage 54-52. Hollins would hold on to the ball for the final shot of the game. With the seconds ticking, Hollins heaved up a deep three and was able to connect, giving Hollins the lead, 55-54 with just two tenths of a second remaining on the clock. The Hollins bench would erupt in celebration and the Phoenix would take a timeout immediately. Still, with two-tenths of a second remaining on the scoreboard, the referees would gather to discuss what had happened and would assess Hollins a technical foul for spilling onto the court with time still remaining on the clock. Down one point and with less than a half a second remaining, Lindsey Purvis would step-up to the free throw line and sink two clutch foul shots that would secure the Phoenix victory, 56-55.

Inside The Box Score: Kai Wyatt and Lindsey Purvis combined for 35 of the Wilson 56 points in this with 18 and 17 points, respectively. Senior Amber Watkins (Honesdale, Pa, Honesdale) and Tioleaoauli Posiulai would each finish the night with six points  piece. Foul shots would be the difference maker in this one as the Phoenix would go 14-21 from the line while Hollins would go 2-2 for the game. Both teams would finish the night shooting 38% from the floor.

Up Next: The women's basketball team will have a few weeks off before returning in 2019 where they will square off against Centenary University on January 5 at 1:00 p.m. in a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) matchup.
