Phoenix Defeat Wildcats, 67-55


CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.- The Phoenix women's basketball team returned to action after the Thanksgiving break to take on the Pennsylvania College of Technology Wildcats. Wilson (2-1, 0-0 CSAC) was able to grab a win against the Wildcats (0-4, 0-0 NEAC) by defeating them, 67-55. 

How It Happened: The Phoenix jumped out to a 12-4 first quarter lead against the Wildcats, however Penn College was able to answer with 4 quick points of their own to end the first quarter with the score being 12-8, Wilson. The second quarter started with Wilson scoring on consecutive trips down the court after freshman Tioleaoauli Posiulai (Waipahu, Hawaii., University Laboratory School) connected on two free-throws followed by a Lindsey Purvis (Fort Myers, Fl, South Fort Myers) layup to bring the score to 16-8. The Wildcats fought back after going on a 6-0 run to cut their deficit to two early in the second period. Both teams would trade buckets for the remainder of the period as the Phoenix went into the half leading, 29-24. The Phoenix came out of halftime in attack mode as they started the third period on a 12-0 run. Wilson received contributions from all five players on the court during the span. The Phoenix led 47-33 with just over 5 minutes remaining in the third as the Wildcats slowly started to chip away at the lead. Penn College was able to get a few key defensive stops which translated to buckets on the other end. The Wildcats ended the quarter on a 8-4 run and cut the lead to 10 entering the final session of play. Wilson started the fourth quarter similar to how they started the third, this time going on a 12-4 run to push their lead to 17 with under 5 minutes to play. The Phoenix run was sparked by freshmen Tori Cole (Middleburg, Fla., Orange Park) and Princess Frazier-Lyles (Montgomery Village, Md., Watkins Mill) as they contributed on both ends of the floor. With three minutes remaining the Wilson lead was stretched to 20 as Penn College would try to mount a comeback. The Wildcats would end the game on an 8-0 run, however their attempt at a comeback proved to be too late as the Phoenix would hold on to win, 67-55. 

Inside the Box Score: The Phoenix shot 38% on the night while shooting 33% from three. They were able to turn Penn College over 18 times throughout the night which translated to 21 points on the other end. Senior Kai Wyatt continued her hot start to the season by finishing with a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Wyatt also had 6 assists for the game. Tioleaoauli Posiulai had 11 points and 6 boards as well, while seniors Amber Watkins and Jordyn Day both had 9 points each.

Up Next: Wilson will look to add another win to their record as they open CSAC play this Wednesday at Keystone College. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m.
