Knights Slip Past Phoenix

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.- The Wilson College women's basketball team battled the Central Pennsylvania College Knights this evening in a non-conference game. The Knights (5-1, 0-0) were able to comeback from a 21-point deficit to defeat the Phoenix (1-1, 0-0 CSAC), 77-75. 

How It Happened: Wilson started out the night hot jumping out to a 15-4 lead with 9 points coming from beyond the arc with threes from seniors Ashley Henderson (Upper Marlboro, Md., North Point), Jordyn Day (Richmond, Va, Varina) and Kai Wyatt (Catonsville, Md.). The Phoenix would extend the score to 20-8 with just under three minutes remaining in the first quarter after Jordyn Day hit another three-pointer and freshman Princess Frazier-Lyles (Montgomery Village, Md., Watkins Mill) scored her first points of the night inside the paint. With under a minute to play in the quarter the Phoenix led 23-13 as Ashley Henderson stroked a three to make it 26-16. However, Hanna Brown of Central Penn was fouled after making a layup and finished off the and-1 by making the free throw bringing the score to 26-16 at the end of the first period. The Phoenix led halfway through the second period 34-23 before Ja'Lynn Burton-Jones of Central Penn knocked down a three to make it 34-26 with just under 6 minutes left. With two and a half minutes remaining in the second the Phoenix led 45-34. Layups by freshman Tioleaoauli Posiulai (Waipahu, Hawaii, University Laboratory School) and senior Lindsey Purvis (Fort Myers, Fla, South Fort Myers) extended the Phoenix lead to 15 with under 2 minutes. A three-pointer by Kai Wyatt made the score 52-35 before Ja'Lynn Burton-Jones made a layup to bring the score to 52-37 at the half.

Wilson came out and grabbed their largest lead of the game after Day hit consecutive three-pointers to give her team a 21-point lead. The Knights began their comeback with a 7-0 run to cut the Phoenix lead to 14. Central Penn would get within five at the end of the third quarter after Wislene Verna made a fast break layup followed by a Burton-Jones three to cap off a 15-4 run to end the quarter. The final period started with back-to-back buckets to bring the Knights within one. The Knights would take their first lead with just over five minutes remaining after Kiera White and Burton-Jones hit shots following two Phoenix misses. The Phoenix would snag the lead back after a layup from Purvis and a free throw from Wyatt made the score 69-67 in favor of Wilson with 4:30 to play. The following possession Burton-Jones hit a three-pointer in transition to give her team a 70-69 advantage. With a 1:50 remaining Jordyn Day knocked down two free throws to give the Phoenix a 74-72 edge. The Knights would make a free throw of their own followed by another Phoenix free throw from Purvis. The Phoenix led 75-73 with a minute left in the contest. Hanna Brown made a huge bucket for the Knights to tie the game at 75. After a Phoenix turnover the Knights would make two free throws on four attempts to grab a 77-75 lead. The Phoenix had one chance left but missed a three-pointer as time expired, the Knights would complete the comeback holding on for a 77-75 win. 

Inside the Box Score: The Phoenix shot 43% on the night while the Knights shot 45%. Wilson would hit 11 three-pointers in the game shooting 44% from outside. The Phoenix had 30 turnovers for the game which led to 21 points for the Knights. Lindsey Purvis led Wilson with 18 points and 8 rebounds.Kai Wyatt added 15 points and 8 rebounds as well. Both Ashley Henderson and Jordyn Day contributed 14 a piece. Ja'Lynn Burton Jones led all scorers with 43 points. 

Up Next: The Phoenix return to action next Monday against the Pennsylvania College of Technology for a 6:00 tip-off.
