Green Terror Rally Past Phoenix

WESTMINSTER, Md. - The Wilson College men's basketball team hit the road for a non-conference match-up with McDaniel College. The Green Terror (2-0) rallied late for a 77-72 victory over the Phoenix (1-3).

How It Happened: The Phoenix jumped out to an early 8-3 when sophomore Zachary Powell (Manassas, Va., Osbourn) drained a jumper. However a quick 6-0 run by the Green Terror put the hosts up 9-8. Trailing 13-12, the Green Terror used a 5-0 run to take a 17-13 lead at the midway point of the half. A pair of three-pointers by freshman Jake Young (Friendship, MD) and a three-pointer by junior Rashaan Bean (San Antonio, Tx, Forest Park) gave the Phoenix their largest lead of the half at 25-17 with five and half minutes to go. Just before the half, senior Keion Adams (Gaithersburg, Md., Seneca Valley) knocked down a long three-pointer and the Phoenix took a 38-32 lead into the break. In the second half, another three-pointer by Adams gave the visitors their largest lead of the second session at 8 points with 17:06 to go and from there the Green Terror began to slowly chip away at the Phoenix advantage. With just over thirteen minutes to play, the Green Terror hit a three-pointer to pull within one point at 50-49 but a layup by freshman RaeShaun Henderson (North Dinwiddie, VA, Dinwiddie HS) put the Phoenix up 52-49. The battle back and forth down the stretch was tight as the Phoenix never led by more than four points. A fast break layup by the Green Terror gave them their first lead of the game at 69-68 with 3:35 to go. A jumper by Adams pulled the Phoenix within 71-70 with 2:44 to play in regulation. The Green Terror drilled a huge three-pointer with twenty-four second remaining to push their lead to 75-70. A bucket by senior Ian Frazier (Palmyra, Pa., Palmyra) made it a three-point game with fourteen seconds to play, but the Green Terror knocked down a pair of free throws to close out the game 77-72.

Inside the Box Score: The Green Terror got a career high 28 points from Aaron Washington. Bean led the Phoenix with 19 points and a game high 8 rebounds. Adams tallied 14 points and freshman Anthony Desruisseau (Burtonsville, MD, Springbrook HS) added 10 points as the only other Phoenix to score in double digits. The Phoenix shot a hot 52% from the field in the first half including 50% from behind the arc, however in the second half they cooled to 36% from the field and 25% from behind the arc. The Green Terror won the turnover battle 18-16 and held a 21-18 edge in points off turnovers. The Phoenix won the battle on the boards 40-32 and had a 13-5 advantage in second chance points.
