Strong Second Half Pushes Raiders Past Phoenix


SHIPPENSBURG, Pa.- The Wilson College men's basketball team made the short trip to Shippensburg University tonight for a non-conference game against the Raiders. Shippensburg (3-0, 0-0 PSAC) controlled the second half of play to defeat the Phoenix (1-2, 0-0 CSAC) by a score of 101-74. 

How It Happened: The Raiders jumped out to an early 14-5 lead five minutes into the competition which came on an 8-0 run after the Phoenix missed 5 consecutive shots during that span. Later in the half, the Phoenix trailed 28-18 as they began to knock down shots to cut into the Raider lead. Consecutive three-pointers by sophomore Rashaan Bean (San Antonio, Texas, Forest Park) made the score 28-24 as Wilson grabbed some momentum in the game. Shippensburg called a timeout and regained their composure as they pushed their lead back up to 10 with 2:30 to play in the first half. Both teams traded buckets for the remainder of the half as Wilson went into the break trailing 43-35. The Phoenix came out of the half and cut the lead to five, however Shippensburg went on a 9-0 run to push their lead back to 14. The Raiders never looked back from that moment as they capitalized on eight second half Phoenix turnovers by scoring 15 points off those turnovers. The Raiders shot 61% from the field during the period and made 16 of 18 free throw attempts in the second half, charging their way to a 58-point half and a 101-74 victory. 

Inside the Box Score: Shippensburg shot 55% from the field in the game while Wilson shot 42%. The Phoenix hit 11 shots from beyond the arc shooting 37% from three. Senior Keion Adams (Gaithersburg, Md., Seneca Valley) led both teams with 22 points on 8-15 shooting and 8 rebounds. Rashaan Bean continued his strong start to the season by adding 16 points. 

Up Next: The Phoenix will travel to McDaniel College on Saturday for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off against the Green Terror.
