Phoenix Bury Gophers, 89-69

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.- The Wilson College men's basketball team kicked off their 2018-19 campaign this evening against the Gophers of Goucher College (1-1, 0-0). The Phoenix grabbed an opening night victory over the Gophers by a score of 89-69.

How It Happened: Both teams came out trading buckets back-and-forth as the score was 11-11 just 5 minutes into play. The Phoenix would go on an 8-0 run in the next 3 minutes and would grab a 19-11 lead. Five of those eight points came from senior guard Ian Frazier (Palmyra, Pa., Palmyra) who finished with 18 points on the night. Both teams would continue to exchange points as Wilson held a 33-26 lead with a little over 2 minutes left in the half. Wilson would end the period on a 9-4 run which was led by freshman Daeshaun Johnson (Waldorf, Md., St. Charles HS) who had 4 points and several rebounds within that stretch. The Phoenix went into halftime with a 42-30 lead over the Gophers. Sophomore Rashaan Bean (San Antonio, Texas, Forest Park) came out in the second half looking to take over as he would score the first six points of the half for the Phoenix. Wilson led 60-43 early in the second half before Goucher would go on a run of their own. Cameron Issacs led a 9-0 run for the Gophers to cut the deficit to 10 with a little over 12 minutes to play. The Phoenix would extend their lead back up to 16 before Goucher began another attempt at a comeback. The Gophers scored the next eight points to cut the lead to eight with 5 minutes left in the contest. Wilson denied the Gopher's comeback by scoring 16 of the next 20 points to end the game and come away with a 89-69 win.

Inside the Box Score: Rashaan Bean led all scorers with 24 points while also grabbing 6 rebounds. Ian Frazier and sophomore Zachary Powell (Manassas, Va., Osbourn) both had solid offensive nights as Frazier had 18 points and Powell had 13. Daeshaun Johnson started his Wilson career off with 10 points and 7 rebounds while sophomore Ian Hess (Orlando, Fla., Lyman) added 11 points. Wilson shot 45% from the field and 32% from behind the arc. Foul shooting was a key difference in the game. The Phoenix made 27 on 34 attempts while Goucher only had 12 attempts at the line.
