McDaniel Blanks Men's Soccer

WESTMINSTER, Md. - The Wilson College men's soccer team stepped out of conference play to take on McDaniel College this evening. The Green Terror (6-4-2) topped the Phoenix (2-7-2) by a final score of 3-0.

How It Happened: After taking the opening possession and getting a shot by senior Ethan Russ (Honolulu, Hawaii, Radford) that was saved by the Green Terror keeper, the Phoenix wouldn't get another shot off for approximately forty minutes as the hosts dominated the ball in the first half. In the ninth minute, Joel Afata gathered a loose ball at the top of the box and ripped a shot into the left side of the net to put the Green Terror up 1-0 early. Despite taking 5 corners and 10 shots the rest of the half, the Green Terror couldn't get the Phoenix defense to break as the visitors denied each shot attempt and trailed 1-0 at the half. Opening the second half with a quick shot was freshman Victor Celleri, but his shot was stopped by the Green Terror keeper. Again, the Phoenix defense faced an onslaught of shots but continued to keep the hosts off the board until the 69th minute when Liam Ireland took a pass and finished at the far post for a 2-0 lead. The Phoenix tried to respond quickly off of a corner kick from senior Carson Tagner (Sound Beach, N.Y., Rocky Point) that Russ put on goal but again the Green Terror keeper denied the shot. A final goal was added to the Green Terror side of the scoreboard via a penalty kick in the 83rd minute to produce the final score of 3-0.

Inside the Box Score: The Green Terror out shot the Phoenix 25-5 including a 10-2 edge in shots on goal. The hosts also held an 11-3 edge in corner kicks. Russ, Celleri and junior Silvio Andrade (Guayaquil, Ecuador, ) were the only Phoenix to take shots while junior goalkeeper Kieren Marshall (Melbourne, Australia, Haileybury) collected 7 saves.

Up Next: Wilson will be back in CSAC action on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. at Bryn Athyn College.
