Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Phoenix Take Down Top Seeded Cairn

LANGHORNE, Pa.- The Wilson College men's soccer team took on the top seeded Cairn University Highlanders today in the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) semi-finals. The Phoenix (3-9-4) upset the Highlanders (13-3-2) by winning 3-1 in penalty kicks and advance to the championship next weekend.

How It Happened: Cairn came out looking to strike early as they were able to control the early possession in the match. Despite multiple shot attempts to begin the contest, Cairn was unable to put any of their shots in the net. The Highlanders also had several corner kick attempts within the first twenty minutes of play but could not capitalize on any of those either. The Phoenix spent most of the first half on the defense as they withstood a total of 13 shots from Cairn. Junior Dan Perry (London, England, Okanagan Secondary) registered three saves for the Phoenix while the Wilson defense managed to block five Highlander shot attempts. At the half the score stayed 0-0. Cairn continued to be the aggressor on the offensive end by getting a few corner kicks and shot attempts in the first five minutes of the second half. Play settled for both sides until the 66:34 mark when Cairn's Brendan Keller sent a header to the net that clanged off of the post. Cairn rattled off two more shots in the next minute one of which was snagged by Dan Perry. The Phoenix were able to find a few scoring chances late in the half coming from Aaron Russ (Honolulu, Hawaii) and Silvio Andrade (Guayaquil, Ecuador,), however both attempts were saved by the Cairn goaltender. The Wilson defense remained solid for the rest of the second half and the game would head to overtime with the score still at 0-0. The first overtime presented little opportunities for either team. Sophomore René Quintanilla (San Salvador, El Salvador, Chambersburg) sent a shot high of the net, while Dan Perry stopped the only chance for the Highlanders and the match would go to a second overtime. In the second period of extended play the Phoenix defense continued their strong performance as they would block another Cairn opportunity with two minutes to play. As if the drama couldn't get any bigger, the match would head to penalty kicks. Senior Carson Tagner would kick first for the Phoenix and he capitalized on the moment by beat the Highlander keeper. Cairn would score on their first kick as well to notch the shootout score at one all. Aaron Russ would go next for Wilson and would make his shot to put the Phoenix back ahead and shift the pressure to the Highlanders. Tyler Smith of Cairn missed his shot giving the Phoenix a chance to really apply the pressure, however Senior Kevin Lysaght would miss for Wilson. Cairn was up again with a chance to tie the score but Brendan Keller missed. Dan Perry would shoot for Wilson next and would make the shot to give the Phoenix a huge 3-1 upset victory.

Inside the Box Score: Despite neither team scoring a goal, the Phoenix were out shot 27-6. Dan Perry had a total of eight saves in the match. The Phoenix only registered three corner kicks to Cairn's eleven. Tagner , Aaron Russ and Dan Perry all had shootout goals.
