Men's Soccer Topped in Championship

LA PLUME, Pa. - The Wilson College men's soccer team came up just short tonight in the championship game of the Colonial States Athletic Conference tournament, falling to Keystone College by a final score of 2-1. The Phoenix (3-10-4), who previously defeated top seeded Cairn University to advance to the finals, fell to the Giants (12-4-1) by one goal for the second time in the last two weeks.

How It Happened: Playing in front of their home crowd at night and under the lights, the Giants offense put the pressure on early taking three shots in the opening minute and a half with one hitting off the crossbar. In the seventh minute Carlos Bonilla took a cross from Kouassi Kouadio and found the back of the goal to put the hosts up 1-0. The Phoenix attack found some success in the fifteenth minute as senior Aaron Russ took the first shot for the visitors but it was blocked. However a minute later, senior Carson Tagner (Sound Beach, N.Y., Rocky Point) found sophomore René Quintanilla (San Salvador, El Salvador, Chambersburg) who ripped a shot into the corner of the goal to tie the game at 1-1. Less than ten minutes later, the Giants had an opportunity to score but the shot hit off the post and another shot was saved by junior goalkeeper Dan Perry (London, England, Okanagan Secondary) keeping the match tied. Just before the half, the Phoenix looked to take a lead as senior Justin Vizzi (Spotswood, NJ, Spotswood) took aim at the goal but his shot was denied by the Giants keeper and the teams went into the half knotted at one a piece. In the second half, the Giants again were on the attack early but Perry was up to the task as he corralled two tough shots on goal, however in the sixtieth minute a goal by Kouassi from Bonilla put the Giants up 2-1. The Phoenix offense tried to respond less than a minute later but the shot by Quintanilla couldn't get past the keeper. The defense for the Phoenix continued to battle but the offense couldn't get any more shots on goal the rest of the way as the Giants held on for the 2-1 victory.

Inside the Box Score: The Giants held a 5-3 edge in shots on goal and enjoyed a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks. Quintanilla led the Phoenix with 2 shots on goal including the only goal of the match for the team. Senior Ethan Russ (Honolulu, Hawaii, Radford) also tallied 2 shots for the Phoenix. Perry recorded 3 saves in goal. This was the second consecutive post-season appearance for the Phoenix and their first appearance in the championship game.

Up Next: This concludes the 2018 season for the men's soccer team.
