Phoenix Advance With 4-1 Win Over Falcons

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.- For the second time in a week the Wilson College field hockey team battled the Falcons of Cedar Crest College, this time in the first-round of the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Playoffs. The Phoenix defeated the Falcons 4-1, and would capture their third victory over Cedar Crest this season. With the win, the Phoenix advance to the semi-final round this Tuesday.

How It Happened: Cedar Crest came out looking to strike quickly as they fired off four shots within the first ten minutes of play. Phoenix sophomore goalie, Brooke McLachlan (High Range, New South Wales, Chevalier), came up with two saves during the time span while the Phoenix defense blocked the other two Falcon chances. The Phoenix switched the field and sophomore Michaela Singer (Annville, Pa., Annville-Cleona) found herself with a breakaway opportunity. Singer had only the goalie to beat and she did so with a shot high and left of the Falcon goaltender. The Phoenix had a 1-0 lead twelve minutes into play. Cedar Crest went back on the attack trying to tie the game at one. The Falcons were awarded five penalty corners in an eight minute period of play and were able to capitalize on one of them. Makenzie Kistler took the insert pass and sent it over to Alexx Miller who fired a rocket that beat McLachlan to her left and knotted things up at one. Play remained tied at one up until halftime. The Phoenix came out in the second half looking to take the lead and did so twelve minutes into play. Senior Lauren Moss (Bloomsburg, Pa., Central Columbia) sent a blistering shot toward the net, freshman Presley Stockslager (Greencastle, Pa., Greencastle-Antrim) managed to get just enough of her stick on the ball to redirect it into the cage for a Phoenix goal. Wilson continued their aggressive play in the second half looking to extend their lead, and they would do so with ten minutes left in the game. Freshman Maddy Miller (Hustontown, PA., Forbes Road) chipped a ball to the middle of the box that was poked in by Singer for her second goal of the game. Wilson would put away Cedar Crest with another goal two minutes later when Singer notched her third goal of the game to cap off her great performance. The Phoenix captured a 4-1 victory in their first playoff game as a member of the CSAC.

Inside the Box Score: The shots were 15-8 in favor of Wilson. Michaela Singer led the Phoenix with three goals while Maddy Miller added two assists. In a combined effort, goalies Brooke McLachlan and sophomore Krista Nayadley, who took over in the second half, limited the Falcons to one goal and had two saves for the game. Sophomore Jenna Carty (Chambersburg, Pa., Greencastle-Antrim) had a solid defensive performance and came up with a save of her own.

Up Next: The Phoenix will host the winner of the NEAC Championship on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. The NEAC Championship is being played tomorrow between Wells and Keuka at 6:00 p.m.
