Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Cyclones Edge Phoenix, 2-1

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J.- The Wilson College men's soccer team battled the Centenary Cyclones today for the third-seed in the upcoming Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Playoffs. Centenary (8-8, 4-2 CSAC) defeated the Phoenix (3-9-3, 2-4-1 CSAC) by a score of 2-1.

How It Happened: Centenary wasted no time grabbing a lead as they scored just under two minutes into the match. Josh Weiss of Centenary received a cross in the front of the box and was able to find the back of the net to give the Cyclones a quick 1-0 lead. The two teams would trade shots for the next fifteen minutes as seniorJustin Vizzi (Spotswood, N.J., Spotswood) sent two shots toward the net within that time, one of which was blocked in front of the goal. Senior Ethan Russ (Honolulu, Hawaii, Radford) also put a shot on goal that was saved by the Cyclone goalie. Centenary was able to strike again in the first half as Chris Spataro beat a Phoenix defender and gave the Cyclones a 2-0 lead just seventeen minutes into play. Wilson would continue to battle with the Cyclones despite being down two goals, as both teams would continue to trade shots. With a bit of help from the goal post and a few saves by Phoenix freshman goalie, Andrew Hetzer (Chambersburg, Pa., Cumberland Valley Christian), Wilson was able to keep the game within reach. The Phoenix brought themselves within one goal when senior Carson Tagner (Sound Beach, N.Y., Rocky Point) found senior Aaron Russ (Honolulu, Hawaii, Radford) on a cross to the near post. Russ was able to get a foot on the ball and beat the keeper to bring the score to 2-1. At the half, the score remained 2-1 in favor of the Cyclones. The second half of play began with the continued trend of both teams trading shots. Junior Kieren Marshall (Melbourne, Australia, Haileybury) took over in goal for the Phoenix and came up with some big saves to keep the game at 2-1. Wilson had several chances to tie the game later in the half including shots by sophomore Samuel Appiah (Kumasi, Ghana, Opoku Ware School), junior Oliver Perry (London, England, Okanagan Secondary) and freshman Brandt Mellott (Chambersburg, Pa., Chambersburg), all of which were saved by the Cyclone goalie. Centenary was able to withstand the late chances by the Phoenix and hold on to win the match, 2-1.

Inside the Box Score: Wilson was out shot 32-19 in the match but did manage to have 12 shots on goal. Aaron Russ notched his fifth goal of the season and Carson Tagner  tallied his second assist on the season. The Phoenix goalies Andrew Hetzer and Kieren Marshall had 14 saves in a combined effort.

Up Next: The Phoenix will travel to face the first-seeded Cairn University Highlanders this Saturday for the first round of the 2018 CSAC Playoffs. A time is yet to be determined for the match.
