Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Phoenix Edge Blazers in Double Overtime

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Wilson College field hockey team was back in action on Monday with a non-conference match-up with Hood College. The Phoenix (8-5) needed a couple of overtimes but defeated the Blazers (1-15) by a final score of 1-0.

How It Happened: While the Phoenix dominated the pace of play and the statistics, the team struggled to put the ball in the cage. Less than a minute into the match, senior Payton Dziemburski (Rising Sun, Md., Rising Sun) fired a shot that was just left of the goal. A few minutes later it was freshman Maddy Miller (Hustontown, PA., Forbes Road) who fired a shot, but it sailed to the right. In the final seven minutes of the first half, the Phoenix put their first shots on goal as freshman Breeann Sheaffer (Middleburg, PA. , Midd-West) and senior Lauren Moss (Bloomsburg, Pa., Central Columbia) each had opportunities to score but the Blazers goal keeper denied both attempts and the teams headed to halftime in a scoreless tie. The second half of action was similar to the first half as the Phoenix continued to control the match, particularly from the defensive side. Each time the Blazers took possession on their offensive side of the field, the Phoenix defense was swarming and limited the visitors to just one shot attempt. The Phoenix had a couple of great looks at scoring in the final minutes of regulation, but a pair of Sheaffer's shots were stopped by the keeper and the teams headed to overtime. In the first over time session, which features a 7-on-7 format, the Phoenix were on the attack but just couldn't quite break through. Sophomore Allison Reber (Narvon, Pa., Garden Spot), Sheaffer, and Moss all put shots on goal, but again were denied. Moss nearly ended it when she ripped a shot that hit the post but it bounced away and the teams headed to overtime number 2. Things got started and ended quickly in the second overtime session as Reber and Moss each took shots less than twelve seconds in. About a minute later, Sheaffer moved the ball down the center and sent a pass toward Reber on the right side of the cage. Reber was able to quickly fire a shot past the keeper and rattle the cage for the game winner.

Inside the Box Score: The Phoenix held an 18-1 advantage in shots including a 12-0 edge in shots on goal. The Phoenix also enjoyed a 14-2 advantage in penalty corners. Moss had a match high 7 shots and was tied with Sheaffer with 4 shots on goal.

Up Next: Wilson will travel to Goucher College to wrap up the regular season on Thursday.
