Giants Rally Past Phoenix in OT

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Wilson College men's soccer team hosted Keystone College this afternoon in Colonial States Athletic Conference action. The Giants (10-3-1, 5-1-0 CSAC) rallied to top the Phoenix (3-8-3, 2-2-1 CSAC) by a final score of 2-1 in overtime. During halftime the Phoenix honored seniors Bassil Andijani (Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, Jeelfaisal), Silvio Andrade (Guayaquil, Ecuador, ), Kevin Lysaght (Toms River, NJ., Toms River North), Sardrick Owusu (Tafo-Kumasi, Ghana, Opoku Ware), Aaron Russ (Honolulu, Hawaii), Ethan Russ (Honolulu, Hawaii, Radford), Carson Tagner (Sound Beach, N.Y., Rocky Point), and Justin Vizzi (Spotswood, NJ, Spotswood)

How It Happened: Both teams came out aggressive and puts shots on goal in the opening minutes of action. The first score of the day came from the Phoenix. A foul by the Giants at midfield set up a direct kick by Tagner who launched it into the box where sophomore René Quintanilla (San Salvador, El Salvador, Chambersburg) headed the shot past the Giants keeper for a 1-0 Phoenix lead. The rest of the half saw the teams trading several header shots inside the box, but none of them were on goal and the Phoenix took a 1-0 lead into the break. The Giants offense controlled possession early in the second half and and put several shots on goal but junior goal keeper Dan Perry (London, England, Okanagan Secondary) came up with some tough saves to protect the Phoenix lead. The hosts were able to keep that lead for most of the match, but playing a man down in the 85th minute the Giants hit the equalizer on a long throw in from the sideline into a crowded box that was headed into the top of the goal to make the score 1-1. The teams headed to the extra session and it didn't take the Giants long to hit the winner as the Phoenix offense turned the ball over in the middle allowing the Giants to have a one on one with Perry and were able to sneak a shot in the right side of the goal for the winner.

Inside the Box Score: The Giants held a 20-6 advantage in shots including a 5-3 edge in shots on goal. Corner kicks favored the Giants by a 9-1 margin while fouls were near even at 24 for the Giants and 22 for the Phoenix. Quintanilla led the Phoenix with a goal and two shots on goal while Tagner added an assist. Perry recorded 3 saves in goal.

Up Next: Wilson will close out the regular season with a conference match at Centenary University on Tuesday.
