Field Hockey Blanks Falcons

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.- The Wilson College field hockey team hosted Cedar Crest College in a pivotal Colonial States Athletic Conference match this afternoon. The Phoenix (7-5, 6-2 CSAC) defeated the Falcons (6-8, 4-3 CSAC) by a score of 2-0. With the win, the Phoenix locked up the #2 seed in the upcoming CSAC tournament and will play host to Cedar Crest again next Saturday. The Phoenix also honored seniors Mackenzie Bindas (Pittsburgh, PA., Burrell ), Kaitlynne Brown (Cassville, PA., Southern Huntingdon County), Tiffany Cobb (Johnstown, Colo., Newbury Park), Payton Dziemburski (Rising Sun, Md., Rising Sun), Shannon Drop (Hatfield, Pa., North Penn), Lauren Moss (Bloomsburg, Pa., Central Columbia), and Katie Shank (Waynesboro, Pa., Waynesboro) today.

How It Happened: It didn't take long for the Phoenix offense to get on the board as sophomore Michaela Singer (Annville, Pa., Annville-Cleona) took a pass in the middle of the box from Moss and rattled the top left of the cage for a 1-0 lead less than six minutes into the match. Singer, Moss, and Cobb continued to take aim at the goal over the next several minutes but the Falcons keeper kept them off the scoreboard. The Phoenix defense was strong as it took the Falcons nearly twenty-five minutes to attempt their first shots, but sophomore goal keeper Brooke McLachlan (High Range, New South Wales, Chevalier) denied both attempts. Right before the break, Singer fired another shot on goal that the Falcons keeper was just able to stop and the hosts headed into halftime with a 1-0 lead. The second half scoring started in the blink of an eye for the Phoenix as Singer ripped a shot that was stopped but Moss gathered the rebound and stuffed it into the cage for a 2-0 advantage just a minute into the period. Five minutes later, the Falcons offense put serious pressure on the Phoenix defense with a series of penalty corners and shots, but McLachlan came up with three consecutive saves to keep the visitors off the scoreboard. While the Phoenix couldn't put any more points on the board, the defense was solid and limited the Falcons to only two more shot attempts the rest of the way en route to the 2-0 shut out victory.

Inside the Box Score: The Phoenix held a 15-9 advantage in shots and each team had 7 attempts on goal. An 11-5 edge in penalty corners favored the Falcons and saves favored the Phoenix 7-5. Singer had a match high 5 shots on goal. McLachlan has allowed only 1 goal to the Falcons in 140 minutes this season.
