Phoenix Rise Above Falcons

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - The Wilson College field hockey team rattled off its third consecutive Colonial States Athletic Conference victory this evening with a 2-1 victory over Cedar Crest College. The Phoenix (4-4, 3-1 CSAC) have moved into second place in the CSAC standings with the win over the Falcons (2-6, 1-1 CSAC).

How It Happened: In the opening minutes, the Phoenix defense withstood a barrage of penalty corner and shot attempts by the Falcons. Sophomore goalkeeper Brooke McLachlan (High Range, New South Wales, Chevalier) recorded three saves to keep the hosts off the board as the Falcons took four early penalty corners and four shots. It didn't take the Phoenix long to score after gaining possession midway through the first half as sophomore Allison Reber (Narvon, Pa., Garden Spot) stayed hot by tallying a goal in her second straight match to give the Phoenix a 1-0 lead. The remainder of the half saw the Phoenix in control as the visitors kept the Falcons from taking another shot attempt, however the Phoenix offense wasn't done. With a little over six minutes to go before the half, sophomore Michaela Singer (Annville, Pa., Annville-Cleona) collected a rebound off her own shot and stuffed it in the back of the cage to put the Phoenix ahead 2-0 at halftime. Early in the second half, the Phoenix had an opportunity to extend the lead as the reigning CSAC Player of the Week senior Lauren Moss (Bloomsburg, Pa., Central Columbia) attempted a penalty stroke, but Falcons goalkeeper Cassandra Reijgers came up with the save. With less than six minutes to go, the Falcons finally broke through as Serena Shuler scored to cut the Phoenix lead to 2-1. The defense played solid over the closing minutes and didn't allow the Falcons another shot en route to the 2-1 victory.

Inside the Box Score: The Phoenix out shot the the Falcons 13-9 including a 10-6 edge in shots on goal. A 9-7 advantage in penalty corners favored the Falcons. Singer had a match high 4 shots on goal and sophomore Jenna Carty (Chambersburg, Pa., Greencastle-Antrim) tallied 2 shots on goal.

Up Next: Wilson will return to action on Friday, October 12 at Bryn Athyn College.
