Phoenix Tame Lions in Field Hockey

BRYN ATHYN, Pa. - The Wilson College field hockey team hit the road for a Colonial States Athletic Conference match at Bryn Athyn College this evening. The Phoenix (5-4, 4-1 CSAC) got a hat trick from sophomore Michaela Singer (Annville, Pa., Annville-Cleona) and the team shut out the Lions (2-7, 1-3 CSAC) for the second time this season with a 4-0 victory

How It Happened: After the Lions took the opening possession down and fired a shot wide, the Phoenix dominated the next twenty-five minutes of action. During that span of time, freshmen Maddy Miller (Hustontown, PA., Forbes Road) and Breeann Sheaffer (Middleburg, PA. , Midd-West), as well as seniors Payton Dziemburski (Rising Sun, Md., Rising Sun) and Lauren Moss (Bloomsburg, Pa., Central Columbia) each ripped shots at the cage but couldn't connect. A couple of shots by the Lions followed, but neither were on goal. A couple of minutes later, the Phoenix offense unleashed a flurry of shots on goal as Moss, Miller and senior Tiffany Cobb (Johnstown, Colo., Newbury Park) all took aim on goal but the Lions goal keeper was solid and turned away all four attempts. Although the Phoenix dominated the stats in the first half, it was the Lions that nearly grabbed the lead just before the half as they fired a shot on goal that hit the post and bounced away and the teams went into the intermission in a scoreless tie. While the story of the second half was similar in terms of the skillful display and dominance of the stats by the Phoenix, the difference was on the scoreboard. It took less than a minute of action for the visitors to grab the lead as Singer connected for a 1-0 lead. The onslaught of shots continued over the next ten minutes and again it was Singer rattling the back of the cage with her second goal giving the Phoenix a 2-0 lead. The game was put away for good in the fifty-third minute as sophomore Allison Reber (Narvon, Pa., Garden Spot) inserted on the penalty corner to Dziemburski who found Singer for her third straight goal. Less than thirty seconds later Moss finished off the scoring with her first goal of the night to push the Phoenix advantage to 4-0. The defense for the Phoenix was outstanding limiting the Lions to just two shots on goal  for the match.

Inside the Box Score: Singer's hat-trick was the second of her career and the first since 2017 versus Immaculata. She now leads the CSAC in goals with 10 for the season and points with 23. Sophomore Brooke McLachlan (High Range, New South Wales, Chevalier) has gone nearly 90 minutes without giving up a goal to Bryn Athyn this season. The Phoenix out shot the Lions 29-8 including 21-2 in shots on goal. The visitors also held a 13-7 edge in penalty corners and have outscored the Lions by a combined 7-0 in the two meetings this season.

Up Next: Wilson is back in action with a CSAC match at Notre Dame of Maryland on Tuesday.
