Men' Soccer Plays Defenders to a Tie

CLARKS SUMMIT, Pa. - The Wilson College men's soccer team faced off against Clarks Summit University on the road in Colonial States Athletic Conference action this evening. The Phoenix (3-7-3. 2-1-1 CSAC) and the Defenders (4-5-2, 0-3-1 CSAC) played to a 1-1 tie.

How It Happened: The action started early as the Defenders took a shot on goal less than three minutes into the match, but senior goal keeper Dan Perry (London, England, Okanagan Secondary) gathered the ball for a save. A quick response came from the Phoenix as senior Justin Vizzi (Spotswood, NJ, Spotswood) fired a shot that was high. After another shot by the defenders, the Phoenix played a ball down the right side and senior Aaron Russ (Honolulu, Hawaii) fed it to the middle where sophomore Silvio Andrade (Guayaquil, Ecuador, ) ripped it into the back of the net for a 1-0 Phoenix advantage. Near the twenty minute mark the Phoenix had an opportunity to score as Andrade sent in a corner kick and senior Ethan Russ (Honolulu, Hawaii, Radford) put a shot on goal but the Defenders keeper stopped it from going in. The Phoenix defense played strong the rest of the half and only allowed one shot on goal for the entire half and took a 1-0 lead into the intermission. Playing a man down in the second half, the Phoenix defense performed admirably, but after twenty minutes the Defenders finally broke through with a goal to tie the match at 1-1. The offense kept attacking for the Phoenix as Ethan Russ put two more shots on goal and freshman Samuel Appiah (Kumasi, Ghana, Opoku Ware School) also took aim on the goal, but all three shots were denied and the teams headed to overtime tied at 1-1. In the first overtime, neither team was able to get a shot on goal and the teams headed to a second overtime. In the second overtime session, the Phoenix got off six shots, four of which were on goal. The best opportunity to win came late in the second session when Ethan Russ took a shot that hit the post and bounced away and the teams finished tied at 1-1.

Inside the Box Score: The Phoenix out shot the Defenders 16-15 including a 9-4 edge in shots on goal. Corner kicks went in favor of the Phoenix 6-3 and the Defenders were called for 20 fouls compared to 24 for the Phoenix. Ethan Russ had a season high 5 shots on goal and Andrade scored a goal for the second consecutive game and is now tied for the team lead with 4 on the season. Perry recorded 3 saves in goal.
