Phoenix Come Up Short Against Giants

La Plume, Pa. - The Wilson College field hockey team came up short against Keystone College in a pivotal Colonial States Athletic Conference match-up this evening. The Giants (11-4, 6-0 CSAC) defeated the Phoenix (6-5, 5-2 CSAC) by a final score of 2-1 in a battle of the top two teams in the conference.

How It Happened: Playing their second game in as many days, the Phoenix offense struggled to get going as the team only manged two  shots in the first half and neither was on goal. The Giants offense took some shots early but it wasn't until a foul call on the Phoenix gave the hosts their first shot on goal via a penalty stroke. Heaven Houck stepped up and hit the shot to give the Giants a 1-0 lead. Just before the half, the Giants added another goal as Jackie Martin grabbed a rebound and stuffed it in for a 2-0 lead at the break. The story of the second half was dominating defenses as both teams struggled to find offensive footing. It wasn't until the final four minutes that the Phoenix took their first shot of the half. Senior Tiffany Cobb (Johnstown, Colo., Newbury Park) fired a shot that was blocked and freshman Breeann Sheaffer (Middleburg, PA. , Midd-West) corralled the rebound and ripped a shot on goal that was saved. A couple of minutes later, the Phoenix executed a penalty corner to perfection as sophomore Allison Reber (Narvon, Pa., Garden Spot) inserted to Sheaffer who fed the ball to sophomore Jenna Carty (Chambersburg, Pa., Greencastle-Antrim) for the goal. The Phoenix couldn't get off another shot in the final minute as the Giants held on for the 2-1 win.

Inside the Box Score: The Giants held a 14-5 advantage on shots including a 5-2 edge in shots on goal. Each team had 6 penalty corners and the Giants committed 40 fouls to 38 for the Phoenix. Sheaffer led the Phoenix attack with 2 shots and an assist while Carty added her third goal of the season.

Up Next: Wilson clinched a playoff spot with their win over Notre Dame of Maryland on Tuesday and will now face Cedar Crest in the final conference match of the season on Saturday at home at 1:00 p.m.
