Field Hockey Sneaks By Gators

BALTIMORE, Md. - The Wilson College field hockey team hit the road for a Colonial States Athletic Conference match-up with Notre Dame of Maryland University. The Phoenix (6-4, 5-1 CSAC) topped the Gators (3-10, 0-7 CSAC) by a final score of 1-0.

How It Happened: After dominating the Gators earlier in the season by a 7-1 margin, the Phoenix offense came out aggressive as freshman Breeann Sheaffer (Middleburg, PA. , Midd-West) and senior Payton Dziemburski (Rising Sun, Md., Rising Sun) fired off three shots in the first four minutes of action but none of the shots found the goal. Just after the midway point of the first half, the Phoenix again were on the attack as sophomore Michaela Singer (Annville, Pa., Annville-Cleona) hit a shot that sailed wide. A couple of minutes later, the visitors finally broke through as freshman Maddy Miller (Hustontown, PA., Forbes Road) gathered the rebound off of her own shot and rattled the back of the cage for a 1-0 lead. The defense was excellent in the first half as the Phoenix did not allow a shot on goal and took a 1-0 edge into the break. In the second half, the Phoenix kept on taking aim at the goal but the Gators goalkeeper was strong in goal and denied several shots from Singer early on. With ten minutes remaining in the match, the Gators made a push for the equalizer but sophomore goalkeeper Krista Nayadley (Hampton, VA, Hampton) stopped back to back shots in front of the goal. Four minutes later, the Gators tried to take advantage of a penalty corner and again put back to back shots on goal, but again Nayadley rejected the shots. One last attempt to tie the match for the Gators came in the last two minutes and Nayadley finished off the combined shut out by recording her fifth save of the half to preserve the 1-0 victory.

Inside the Box Score: The Phoenix held a 17-8 edge in shots and a 7-5 advantage in shots on goal. A 14-4 edge in penalty corners favored the Phoenix while the fouls were nearly even with the Gators collecting 44 to 42 for the Phoenix. Singer led the Phoenix with 6 shots including 3 on goal. Nayadley and sophomore Brooke McLachlan (High Range, New South Wales, Chevalier) combined for the shut out in goal.

Up Next: Wilson will be on the road tomorrow with a pivotal match at Keystone College as the top two teams in the conference square off for the second time this season.
