Phoenix Roll Over Highlanders

LANGHORNE, Pa. - The Wilson College women's volleyball team took a big step toward earning a spot in the Colonial States Athletic Conference tournament with a win on the road at Cairn University today. The Phoenix (5-10, 3-3 CSAC) topped the Highlanders (6-14, 3-2 CSAC) 3-0 by scores of 25-19, 25-18, and 25-20 and currently sit in the sixth and final playoff spot with two conference games remaining.

How It Happened: Trailing 5-4 in the first set, the Phoenix scored six of the next eight points highlighted by four kills by junior Laury Jean Baptiste (Fort Lauderdale, Fl., Coconut Creek) to put the team up 10-7. The Phoenix would gradually grow the lead to six points on a kill by freshman Tia Jones (Springfield, VA., Lake Braddock) making it 17-11 and the visitors would go on to close out the first set on another kill by Jean-Baptiste by a score of 25-19. In the second set the Phoenix roared out to a 10-2 lead on the strength of three kills by senior Hanna Quarry (Elizabethtown, Pa., Elizabethtown). Later in the set, a kill by freshman Tioleaoauli Posiulai (Waipahu, HI., University Laboratory School) pushed the lead to 15-4, but a 8-0 run by the Highlanders pulled the hosts within 16-13. The Phoenix responded by winning six of the next seven points with Quarry tallying three more kills and the team would close out the set 25-18 on another Quarry kill. Set number three started out with the two teams trading points to 4-4, but the Phoenix would rattle off six of the next seven points to take a 10-5 lead. The Highlanders clawed back into the match eventually pulling to within one point at 16-15, but kills by Quarry and Jean-Baptiste along with an attack error gave the Phoenix some breathing room at 19-15 and the team went on to win the set 25-20 and the match 3-0.

Inside the Box Score: Quarry had a season high 12 kills and Posiulai added 12 kills of her own. Freshman Kristina Zuniga (McAllen, TX., King George) added a season high 31 assists and Jones Tallied 13 digs. For the match, the Phoenix had 41 kills against 14 kills on 107 attempts for a .252 attacking percentage while the Highlanders totaled 27 kills against 23 errors on 104 attempts for a .038 attacking percentage.
