Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Phoenix Roar Past Lions

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.- This evening, the Wilson College Women's Volleyball team was in action tonight in a nonconference matchup against the Penn State Mont Alto Nittany Lions. The Phoenix (6-10, 3-3 CSAC) defeated the Nittany Lions (11-12), 3 sets to 2, in a fantastic team victory. This victory earned Wilson their fourth straight win.

How It Happened: With the teams being just eleven miles apart from one another, you could feel the intensity and focus from both teams before the match started. The first set took off with rallies from both teams and continued that way for most of it. The score went back and forth throughout, but Wilson was able to weather the Mont Alto's attack and took the first set by a score of 25-22. The second set would start right where the first set left off, both teams rallying and trying to take the lead. The Phoenix had 7 errors in this set, which proved to by costly in the end as the Nittany Lions would win the second set by a score of 25-16. Errors would come back to bite Wilson, again, in the third set as both teams tried to gain the upper hand. The two contestants would trade points constantly with neither one being able to take control of the lead. Even after a great rally from the Phoenix, Mont Alto would finish off the set and win 26-24. As the two teams prepared for the fourth set, the intensity grew. The Phoenix came out firing and bombarded the Nittany Lions with 12 kills in the set with only three errors. They would tie the sets in the match after winning this one, 25-18. With both teams having 2 sets a piece, Wilson came out ready and determined to finish off Mont Alto. The Phoenix would quickly jump out to a 6-2 lead before a Penn State timeout. This didn't stop Wilson though; after the timeout they kept firing and extended their lead to 8-3 before another Nittany Lion timeout. The Phoenix would finish of the set by a score of 15-7, wining the match 3 sets to 2.

Inside The Box Score: Wilson would finish the match with 47 kills, with 30 errors on 192 total attempts. The Phoenix led both teams with ten aces, freshman Kristina Zuniga (McAllen, Texas, King George) led the team with three while freshman Tia Jones (Springfield, Va., Lake Braddock) and Tioleaoauli Posiulai (Waipahu, Hawaii, University Laboratory School) would each finish with two. Zuniga would finish with a career high 39 assists. Posiulai added 16 kills, junior Laury Jean Baptiste (Fort Lauderdale, Fl., Coconut Creek) added ten and Jones added eight kills.

Up Next: The Phoenix will play their homecoming match this Saturday, October 20, at 3:00 p.m. where they'll square off against Rosemont College in a Colonial States Athletic Conference match.
