Phoenix Tame Lions

BRYN ATHYN, Pa. - The Wilson College Phoenix tamed the Bryn Athyn College Lions tonight 66-55. This conference win moves the Phoenix up to 9-10 overall and 4-6 in the NEAC. The Lions now have a record of 5-15 overall and 2-8 in the NEAC.

How It Happened: The first quarter started out as a defensive effort from both sides of the court. Junior Lindsey Purvis (Fort Myers, Fl) added to the defensive effort with an atheletic block. Helping to get things moving for the Phoenix offense, junior Kristen Burdo (Norristown, Pa.) scored on a fast break assisted by junior Jordyn Day (Richmond, Va). Purvis then scored a couple more buckets from in the paint, one of which was assisted by Day. The first quarter ended 12-12. The Lions were first to score coming into the second. The quarter was a close one, and the Lions pulled ahead for several minutes. The Phoenix tied up the score 25-25 with 2:03 left in the half. The Lions were last to score before the half time buzzer, but the Phoenix finished two points in the lead 29-27 at the break.

Both teams scored 16 points in the third quarter while exchanging the lead a few times. The Phoenix flew ahead at first. Senior Jasmine Wallace (Detroit, MI) had a great play after she stole the ball and scored on the fast break. But soon the the Lions passed them. Before the fourth quarter started, the Phoenix grabbed the lead with a three-pointer from freshman Michaela Singer (Annville, Pa.). The Phoenix opened up the fourth quarter with 2 three-pointers: one from Singer and one from Day. The Phoenix really began to soar past the Lions in the fourth quarter when they outscored them 21-12. The Phoenix completed their victory 66-55.

Inside the Box Score: Day scored nearly half of her team's 66 points tonight as she added 29 to the scoreboard. Purvis had a double-double tonight with 13 boards and 15 points. Singer was the last Phoenix in double digits tonight with 11 tallies in the point column. The Phoenix made 37% of their shots while the Lions made only 28.2%. While the Lions had more second chance points, the Phoenix had more points off turnovers and more points from the bench.
