Phoenix Win a Pair on the Road

DALLAS, Pa. - The Wilson College men's volleyball team played two matches on the road today. In the first game they won 3-0 against the Wilkes University Colonels. The Phoenix took their next match 3-0 as well against the Misericordia Cougars (3-3). The Phoenix are now 2-0 on the season.

How It Happened: The Phoenix won their first set against the Colonels 25-17. It started out with a 5-1 run. The Colonels and the Phoenix exchanged the ball several times, but two more 4 point runs gave the Phoenix a consistent lead. The Phoenix then went on to win the second set 25-18. A couple plays early on by sophomore Nick Baxter (Denver, Pa.) gave the Phoenix some momentum with a kill followed by a service ace. The third set was the closest yet with the Colonels just five points behind the Phoenix who won the set 25-20 to sweep the match.

The Phoenix went on to win the match against the Cougars 3-0. They won the first set 25-18. It began with a 7-2 run that established an early lead for the Phoenix. As the set progressed scoring became more even, but the Cougars didn't catch up. The Phoenix then won the second set a close 26-24. The two teams were neck and neck. The Phoenix would pull ahead and the Cougars would catch up and pass them. Then the Phoenix would grab the lead back until finally a combination of two aces from Baxter and a kill by freshman Carlos Jimenez (Miami Beach. FL.) brought in the win. The Phoenix then won the third set 25-20. They began the set with two aces by sophomore Ian Firestone (York, Pa.) and then finished it with a kill by junior Aaron Hoke (Chambersburg, Pa.) assisted by Firestone.

Inside the Box Score: Firestone was a big influence on the court today as he had 35 assists in the first match against Wilkes and 24 assists against the Cougars. Baxter had 19 total kills today, Jimenez had 18 kills combined, and Aaron Hoke had 17 kills combined. Jimenez played strong defense as well as he led the Phoenix in digs for both matches recording 11 against the Colonels and 7 against the Cougars.

In the first match versus the Colonels the Phoenix had 41 kills against 11 errors on 82 total attacks for a solid .366 attack percentage. The Colonels had 24 kills against 12 errors on 66 attempts for a .182 hitting percentage.

In the second match versus the Cougars the Phoenix had 28 kills against 19 errors on 79 total attacks for a .114 attack percentage. The Cougars had 26 kills against 25 errors on 87 total attacks for a .011 percentage.
