Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Chargers Rally Past Phoenix

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Wilson College men's basketball team hosted Lancaster Bible College in a match-up of the top two teams in the NEAC South Division. The visiting Chargers (14-4, 9-0 NEAC)  topped the Phoenix (12-6, 6-3 NEAC) 76-75.

How It Happened: The game was tight throughout with neither team holding more than a single digit lead. Just over five minutes in the Chargers held a 15-9 lead, but the Phoenix answered with a three-pointer by sophomore Rashaan Bean (San Antonio, Tx, Forest Park), a layup by senior Willie McDowell (Baltimore, MD, Augusta Fells Savage Institute), and a three-pointer by freshman Zachary Powell (Manassas, Va., Osbourn) and the game was tied at 19-19 at the midway point. Later in the half, a 10-3 run by the Phoenix highlighted by a three-pointer from junior Keion Adams (Gaithersburg, Md., Seneca Valley) and a layup by junior Ian Frazier (Palmyra, Pa., Palmyra) put the hosts ahead 32-25 with under three minutes to play in the half. A three-pointer just before the buzzer by Powell with an assist from senior Martez Beckett (Randallstown, Md., Chapelgate Christian) made the score 38-31 in favor of the Phoenix at halftime. The Chargers opened the second half by quickly cutting the Phoenix advantage down to three points, but back-to-back buckets by McDowell and a jumper by Adams gave the Phoenix their largest lead of the night at 51-42. A run of 12-0 by the Chargers gave the visitors their first lead of the second half at 54-51. However, Adams answered with a three-pointer for the Phoenix and the game was knotted at 54 all at the halfway point of the second half. Neither team would lead by more than five points the rest of the way and with less than five minutes to play, the Phoenix regained the lead 68-66 on a three-pointer by Frazier. The Chargers would rattle of six straight points, but again the Phoenix answered with a three-pointer by Powell and the game was tied at 72-72 with just over two minutes to play. As the final seconds wound down, freshman Cole Christian (Chambersburg, PA., Chambersburg) hit a three-pointer to pull the Phoenix within 76-75 with four seconds to play. A quick foul put the Chargers to the free throw line with one second to play and although both free throws were missed a full court desperation three-point attempt by Adams missed and the Chargers escaped with the 76-75 win.

Inside the Box Score: For the game the Phoenix shot 43% from the field but just 58% from the charity stripe. The Chargers outscored the Phoenix 36-24 in the paint and held a 44-35 edge in rebounds. McDowell led the Phoenix with 19 points. Powell added 18 points while Bean recorded a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds. Adams was the only other Phoenix to score in double-digits with 12 points.

Up Next: Wilson will be back on the court on Wednesday, January 31 at Bryn Athyn.
