Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Phoenix Yield to Wildcats

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - It was another close match up for the Phoenix today at Gannett Memorial Field House as they tipped off against the Wildcats of Penn College. The hosting Phoenix (6-8, 2-4 NEAC) lost to the Wildcats (2-11, 1-4 NEAC) by a score of 54-63.

How It Happened: The Wildcats got their second overall win today and their first conference win of the season. The Phoenix had a strong first quarter as they outscored the Wildcats 20-15. It was close to start out, but the Phoenix started to pull ahead after a jumper from junior Kristen Burdo (Norristown, Pa.). The Phoenix displayed aggression early on as freshman Michaela Singer (Annville, Pa.) snagged the ball from the Wildcats offense and passed it off to junior Ashley Henderson (Upper Marlboro, Md.) for three points. The Phoenix then took off on an eight point run and held a game high twelve point lead for the game. They went into the second quarter five points ahead. The score began to slowly slip away for the Phoenix, but neither team scored very much from the field in the second. Singer sunk a three-pointer early on and junior Amber Watkins (Honesdale, Pa) made some nice jump shots to bolster the Phoenix tally.

By halftime the Wildcats had closed the Phoenix's lead to only a two point deficit to make the score 28-26 Phoenix. The Wildcats made a difference for themselves on the scoreboard from behind the arc. The Phoenix on the other hand put in a lot of work in the paint, especially from junior Lindsey Purvis (Fort Myers, Fl). The Wildcats gained the lead twice in the third and kept that lead as they went into the fourth quarter up 47-44. The Wildcats took their momentum into the last quarter despite some good offensive plays from the Phoenix, who struggled at times to find the net. Junior Jordyn Day (Richmond, Va) helped out with three-pointer, and Purvis was active in the paint, but the Wildcats kept rolling to take the victory 63-54.

Inside the Box Score: Purvis recorded a double-double this afternoon with 11 points and 14 rebounds. Day led her team in scoring with 14 points. The Wildcats out shot the Phoenix in field goals 31.5%-23.8%. The Phoenix had more depth on the bench though as they out scored their opponents in that category 20-8. The Phoenix also excelled in the paint compared to their opponent 18-10. Finally, the Phoenix capitalized on turnovers more than their opponents, managing to score 15 points off turnovers as opposed to the Wildcats' 8 points. Jane Herman of the Wildcats was the game's leading scorer with 20 points.

Up Next: The Phoenix's next match up is away against Gallaudet College on Wednesday, January 17, at 7:00 p.m.
