Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Phoenix Thwart the Fighting Tigers

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Today the Wilson College women's basketball team returned to action on their home court for a conference contest against the Fighting Tigers of SUNY Cobleskill. The Phoenix (6-7, 2-3 NEAC) triumphed over the Fighting Tigers (7-7, 2-4) by a score of 72-68.

How It Happened: It was a close match up tonight for these two teams, but the Phoenix were dominant in the first half. Junior Lindsey Purvis (Fort Myers, Fl) was first to score a field goal with a jumper in the paint. After a lay up for the Fighting Tigers, Purvis did it again with another jumper. The next Phoenix to add points to the scoreboard was junior Ashley Henderson (Upper Marlboro, Md.),  who stole the ball and took it to the net for a lay-up. The Fighting Tigers' Addy Lawson then tied the score 10-10 with a three pointer. Scoring went back and forth, and junior Jasmine Wallace (Detroit, MI) tied the score up again, this time 17-17, with just over two minutes left in the first quarter. The second quarter started 20-18 Phoenix. Henderson lofted a three-pointer into the net to make it 23. Shortly after, junior Amber Watkins (Honesdale, Pa) stole the ball playing aggressive defense, and she passed it off to Purvis for 2. Monique Britton of the Fighting Tigers landed two three-pointers to slice their deficit to make the score 27-24 Phoenix. Then junior Jordyn Day (Richmond, Va) made it look easy to score from behind the arc as she answered with long three-pointer. Junior Kristen Burdo (Norristown, Pa.) finished out the half with a three-pointer of her own to make the score 39-33 in favor of the Phoenix.

The third quarter was the closest quarter of the game with each team recording 15 points. Still, the Phoenix stayed strongly in the lead. A steal from Wallace got the fans cheering as she brushed by three defenders to land a lay up. However, 10 of the Fighting Tigers' total points in the third quarter came from the free throw line. The Fighting Tigers were hungry for the win, and it showed in the fourth quarter as they outscored the Phoenix 20-18. It was not enough to catch up, however, as Purvis made sure to pad the Phoenix's lead from inside the paint. Shaliyah Graham landed a three-pointer at the buzzer for the Fighting Tigers, but the Phoenix came out victorious after a hard fought game 72-68.
