Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Phoenix Fly Past Fighting Tigers

CHAMBERBURG, Pa. - The Wilson College men's basketball team returned to their home court after winter break today to tip off against the Fighting Tigers of SUNY Cobleskill in NEAC competition. The Phoenix (9-5, 3-2) got their third conference win of the season, edging out their opponents, the Fighting Tigers (4-9, 1-5), by a score of 89-81.

How It Happened: The game got a bit of a slow start with the first two minutes scoreless for both teams. Freshman Zachary Powell (Manassas, Va.) broke the ice with a lay up. The Fighting Tigers responded quickly with a jumper. The score stayed close for the first half with a lot of back and forth scoring on the court. Powell scored another layup, then sophomore Rashaan Bean (San Antonio, Tx) got on the scoreboard with a jump shot. A turnover gave Malik Chambers of the Fighting Tigers a chance for a fast break in the paint to make the score 6-6. Bean was sure to answer with a lay up assisted by junior Keion Adams (Gaithersburg, Md.). A three-pointer from freshman Ian Hess (Orlando, Fl.) made things start to look even better for the Phoenix. But one jump shot and one three-pointer later, and the Fighting Tigers snagged the lead 13-11. After a three-pointer from Powell, the Phoenix held the largest lead of the game for either team up to that point as they led their opponents 26-21 with just over seven minutes left in the half. The score was tied three more times before the half ended 42-40 Phoenix.

The Fighting Tigers came in strong after the break and scored a quick jumper to tie it up 42-42. A quick seven point run consisting of a lay-up and three pointer for Bean and a jumper for senior Willie McDowell (Baltimore, MD) put the Phoenix back up 49-44. The Phoenix's advantage shrunk when the Fighting Tigers' Joel Costello sunk a three-point bucket. Still, McDowell and Bean both made their presence known to and dreaded by their opponents as they scored 12 points and 13 points respectively in the second half alone. Freshman Cole Christian (Chambersburg, PA.) made his home court debut count with some crucial scoring opportunities and strong defense. With just over five minutes left in the game the score was tied 76-76. It was the Phoenix who soared ahead and refused to be caught. The home team missed only one free throw in the last five minutes of the game for a number of critical foul shots that ensured their victory  89-81.

Inside the Box Score: Powell led the Phoenix this afternoon in scoring with 27 total points. Bean recorded a double double with 10 rebounds and 17 points. Adams, too, had a double double with 10 rebounds and 14 points. McDowell recorded double digits in the point column tonight as well with 14. The Fighting Tigers were more accurate in shooting with a 45.6 percentage while the Phoenix were a close 44.6% accurate. The Phoenix also outscored their opponents 12-6 behind the arc tonight. Tonight's match was close all around as each team gained the lead six times and Cobleskill managed to tie up the score a total of nine times throughout.
