Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Phoenix Denied By Nittany Lions

READING, Pa. - The Wilson College women's basketball team opened the 2018 portion of the schedule with a trip to Penn State Berks. The host Nittany Lions (4-5, 2-2 NEAC) topped the Phoenix (5-7, 1-3 NEAC) by a final score of 74-72.

How It Happened: The Phoenix took an early 9-6 lead in the first quarter on a three-pointer by junior Amber Watkins (Honesdale, Pa, Honesdale). A 7-0 run by the Nittany Lions put them back on top 13-9. Later in the quarter junior Ashley Henderson (Upper Marlboro, Md., North Point) drained a three-pointer to bring the Phoenix within one point at 17-16, but the Nittany Lions closed out the first quarter with a 22-18 lead. Solid offense and a stingy defense gave the Phoenix a boost in the second quarter as they outscored the Nittany Lions 19-8 in the quarter highlighted by 8 points by junior Lindsey Purvis (Fort Myers, Fl, South Fort Myers) as the visitors took a 37-30 advantage into the break. Back-to-back three-pointers by junior Jordyn Day (Richmond, Va, Varina) to open the third quarter pushed the Phoenix lead to 12 points at 43-31, however the Nittany Lions answered with a 14-2 run to tie the game at 45-45. A bucket by Purvis and a three-pointer by Day pushed the Phoenix back up by five points but again the Nittany Lions would go on a run and close out the third quarter with the teams tied at 57-57. In the final period, the Phoenix jumped out to a six point advantage on a layup by junior Jasmine Wallace (Detroit, MI, Bladensburg (Md.)). The Nittany Lions chipped away at the lead and eventually took a five point lead with three and half minutes remaining. The Phoenix cut the lead to two points on two occasions in the final 1:30 on buckets by Henderson and Wallace, the latter coming with thirteen seconds to go. A steal by Day in the final seconds led to a desperation three-point attempt by Henderson but the shot didn't connect and the Nittany Lions held on for the 74-72 win.

Inside the Box Score: Purvis led the Phoenix with a 21 point and 13 rebound double-double. Henderson added 14 points while Day tallied 12 points. Watkins and Wallace each added 8 rebounds for the Phoenix.
