Lions Roar Past Phoenix

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Wilson College Phoenix women's volleyball team suffered a loss in close competition against the Penn State Mont Alto Nittany Lions 3-2. The Phoenix now move to a record of 0-5, and the Nittany Lions celebrate their first win of the 2017 season. Freshman libero Sierra Hill (Hagerstown, Md.) maintained the Phoenix defensive stronghold as she recorded 29 digs for the match.

How It Happened: The first set was a 25-13 loss for the Phoenix as they recorded only 1 kill in comparison to the Nittany Lions' 10 kills. The Phoenix were resurgent in the second set, however. This time the score was a close 26-24 in the Phoenix's favor as they recorded a positive attack percentage of .114. While the Phoenix did not muster and deliver the same level of offensive attacks as their opponents, they also didn't record nearly as many errors. In the second set for example, the Nittany Lions had 11 errors while the Phoenix had only two. The Nittany Lions claimed set number three by a score of 25-21 and had an attack percentage of .033 compared to the Phoenix's -.250. The Phoenix responded by claiming the next set 25-21 while recording a match high 7 kills for the team. Unfortunately, set number five went to the Nittany Lions 15-12 and the Lions claimed victory for the match, a close 3-2.

Inside the Box Score: The Phoenix had 18 kills against 23 errors on 143 total attempts for a -.035 attack percentage. The Nittany Lions recorded an attack percentage of .017 with 41 kills against 38 errors on 173 total attempts.

Junior Hanna Quarry (Elizabethtown, Pa.) led the Phoenix offense with 6 kills for the match. Sophomore Laury Jean Baptiste (Fort Lauderdale, Fl.) recorded team highs for the match in both aces and blocks with 4 and 2, respectively. Quarry also had 17 digs and freshman Leslie Farnes (Coconut Creek, Fl.) contributed 16 digs.


Up Next: The Phoenix's next match is a North Eastern Athletic Conference match at home on Thursday, September 14, at 7:00 p.m. against Gallaudet University.
