Late Goals Propel Phoenix over Lions


BRYN ATHYN, Pa. - The Wilson College men's soccer team earned its second straight win with a come from behind victory over North Eastern Athletic Conference foe Bryn Athyn. The Phoenix (4-3-1, 2-1-0) defeated the Lions (2-5, 0-3) by a score of 2-1.

How It Happened: A defensive struggle in the first half as the teams combined for just three shots on goal. For the Phoenix, the first shot on goal came with less than three minutes to go in the half as sophomore Oliver Perry (London, England, Okanagan Secondary) took a header shot that was saved by the Lions goalkeeper. The defensive struggle continued for much of the second half as neither team put a shot on goal in the first twenty minutes of action. The host Lions finally broke through with a goal at the seventy minute mark to pull ahead 1-0. In the seventy-seventh minute of action, the Phoenix took their first shot on goal of the half and junior Ethan Russ (Honolulu, Hawaii, Radford) recovered a shot that was blocked by the goalie and chipped in for the equalizer. The Phoenix offense continued to keep the pressure on and in the eighty-second minute sophomore Aaron Russ (Honolulu, Hawaii) collected a loose ball in the box and ripped it into the net for a 2-1 lead. The defense held strong and closed out the game without allowing another shot on goal as the Phoenix went on for the 2-1 victory.

Inside the Box Score: The Phoenix held an 11-10 edge in shots, however the Lions had a 6-4 advantage in shots on goal. The Phoenix also enjoyed a 5-2 edge in corner kicks. Sophomore goalkeeper Dan Perry (London, England, Okanagan Secondary) recorded 5 saves.
