Mustangs Corral Phoenix

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. - The Wilson College field hockey team opened up North Eastern Athletic Conference play at Morrisville State College. The host Mustangs (3-6, 3-0) topped the Phoenix (5-4, 0-1) by a final score of 3-1.

How It Happened: The Mustangs jumped out on top 1-0 near the midpoint of the first half as Lauren Kellum scored off of a penalty corner. Possession stayed with the Mustangs offense for a good part of the half as they continued to put pressure on the Phoenix defense. The Mustangs had another opportunity to score in the twenty-third minute but freshman Jenna Carty (Chambersburg, Pa., Greencastle-Antrim) recorded a nice defensive save. A few minute later, the Phoenix took only their second shot of the half as sophomore Lydia Garfinkle (Arendtsville, Pa., Biglerville) fired a shot wide. A pair of shots by the Mustangs right before the half were headed for the goal but senior goalkeeper Kayla Butts (Pasadena, Md., Chesapeake) and juniorPayton Dziemburski (Rising Sun, Md., Rising Sun) each recorded a save and the teams went into the half with the hosts holding a 1-0 advantage. In the opening minutes of second half the Mustangs put another score on the board to make it 2-0. The Phoenix offense wasn't able to get going and in the fifty-fourth minute, the Mustangs pushed their lead to 3-0. A quick transition by the Phoenix led to a breakaway opportunity and senior Miranda Long (Catawissa, Pa., Southern Columbia) was able to find freshman Kailey Mixell (Gettysburg, Pa., Gettysburg) and she rattled the cage to pull the Phoenix within 3-1. However, over the final fifteen minutes the Phoenix would not get off another shot as the Mustangs would go on for the 3-1 win.

Inside the Box Score: The Mustangs held a 10-1 advantage in shots on goal and 11-3 edge on penalty corners. Carty's defensive save was her third of the season which leads the team.

Up Next: Wilson will be in action on Sunday as the team travel to Sweet Briar College for a 4:00 p.m. start.
