Phoenix Soar Over Falcons

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Wilson College field hockey team welcomed Cedar Crest College for non-conference action this evening. The Phoenix (5-3) topped the Falcons (4-3) by a score of 5-3.

How It Happened: Freshman Michaela Singer (Annville, Pa., Annville-Cleona) continued to stay hot as she scored midway through the first half with an assist from classmate Kailey Mixell (Gettysburg, Pa., Gettysburg) to give the Phoenix a 1-0 lead. Four minutes later, Singer rattled the cage again, this time with help from senior Miranda Long (Catawissa, Pa., Southern Columbia) and the hosts climbed out to a 2-0 advantage. Despite eight penalty corners by the Falcons in the first half, they were only able to put three shots on goal and freshman goalkeeper Krista Nayadley (Hampton, VA, Hampton) corralled two of the three attempts while freshman defender Jenna Carty (Chambersburg, Pa., Greencastle-Antrim) recorded a defensive save on the other shot. The Phoenix took a 2-0 lead into the half. During the opening minutes of the second half, it appeared the Phoenix had put the game away when Carty scored with an assist from junior Lauren Moss (Bloomsburg, Pa., Central Columbia) to stretch the lead to 3-0, but the Falcons had other plans. The Falcon offense continued to pressure the Phoenix defense and eventually broke through with a goal in the forty-ninth minute to make the score 3-1. Just over a minute later, Long was able to break through in the middle and beat the Falcons goalkeeper on the left side for a 4-1 lead. The Falcons had a quick answer as Annalise Unger made the score 4-2 just over three minutes later. Another Falcons goal with seven minutes to go brought the visitors within one at 4-3. A quick transition to offense by the Phoenix was proceeded by a flurry of shots as junior Lydia Garfinkle (Arendtsville, Pa., Biglerville) ripped a shot that was saved, but set up a Phoenix penalty corner. Off the corner Mixell took a shot, gathered the rebound and fired another shot which Long rebounded and fired towards the goal but a defensive save stopped it from going in and then a penalty was called on the Falcons defense. Moss stepped up to fire the penalty stroke and she ripped it past the goalkeeper to make the score 5-3 and put the game away with just over a minute remaining.

Inside the Box Score: Singer recorded multiple goals for the second consecutive match as she leads the team with 8 on the season. Carty's goal was the first of her collegiate career and Mixell recorded an assist for the second straight match. The Falcons held a 21-5 edge in penalty corners while the Phoenix had a 10-8 advantage in shots on goal.
