Phoenix Fall to Nittany Lions

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa - The Wilson College men's soccer team opened North Eastern Athletic Conference play versus Penn State Abington today. The Nittany Lions (3-5, 1-0 NEAC) topped the Phoenix (2-3-1, 0-1 NEAC) by a score of 3-1.

How It Happened: The Nittany Lions wasted no time getting on the board as Sean Seidenburg knocked in a header off a corner kick from Jose Palomeque in the eleventh minute. An attempt by the Phoenix to answer quickly just missed as sophomore Silvio Andrade (Guayaquil, Ecuador) shot went wide less than a minute later. Midway through the half, the Nittany Lions scored off another corner kick as Chris Halasa scored with an assist from Andrew Costa to put the visitors up 2-0. Late in the first half, freshman René Quintanilla (San Salvador, El Salvador, Chambersburg) took aim at the net, but the Nittany Lions goalkeeper collected the save. In the opening minutes of the second half, the Phoenix narrowly missed on a scoring opportunity as junior Aaron Russ (Honolulu, Hawaii) ripped a shot that hit the post. Junior Justin Vizzi (Spotswood, NJ, Spotswood) gathered the rebound but his shot was stopped by the goalkeeper. Seconds later senior Effren Amezquita (Xela, Guatemala, Chambersburg) ripped a shot but it sailed wide. The Nittany Lions pushed the lead to 3-0 in the seventy-sixth minute. The Phoenix continued to battle and in the eighty-third minute scored  as Aaron Russ took a shot from outside the box with an assist from freshman Alex Molchanoff (Sydney, Australia, Manly Selective) to get the team on the board at 3-1. The Nittany Lions defense would hold the rest of the way and close it out with a 3-1 win.

Inside the Box Score: The Phoenix held a 13-12 advantage in shots while the Nittany Lions held a 10-5 edge in shots on goal. The Phoenix also held a 5-4 edge in corner kicks and sophomore goalkeeper Dan Perry (London, England, Okanagan Secondary) collected a game high 7 saves.
