CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Wilson College field hockey team hosted Immaculata University in non-conference play this afternoon. The Phoenix (4-3) got a hat-trick from freshman
Michaela Singer (Annville, Pa., Annville-Cleona) in the 5-2 victory over the Mighty Macs (2-6).
How It Happened: The Phoenix wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as Singer took a pass from fellow freshman
Kailey Mixell (Gettysburg, Pa., Gettysburg) in front of the cage and scored to make it 1-0 just thirty-five seconds into the match. Just over 90 seconds later senior
Miranda Long (Catawissa, Pa., Southern Columbia) took at a pass at the left post from junior
Payton Dziemburski (Rising Sun, Md., Rising Sun)Â and rattled the cage for a 2-0 Phoenix lead. The early scoring for the Phoenix wasn't over as Singer notched her second goal of the day with an assist form junior
Lauren Moss (Bloomsburg, Pa., Central Columbia) to give the hosts a 3-0 advantage less then ten minutes into the match. Defensively, the Phoenix played strong most of the first half as the Mighty Macs didn't take their first shot until the twenty-seventh minute. However, the visitors were able to break through off a penalty corner as the Might Macs Layne Kennedy took a shot that was saved by freshman goalkeeper
Krista Nayadley (Hampton, VA, Hampton), but the rebound bounced right to the Mighty Macs Amanda Miller who put it in for the goal cutting the Phoenix lead to 3-1. Neither team took another shot the remainder of the half and the Phoenix took a 3-1 lead to the break. Early in the second half, the Mighty Macs scored just over two minutes it to make it a 3-2 game. After a pair of nice saves by Nayadley, the Phoenix quickly went on the attack as Mixell and Moss each took shots that just missed. A pair of penalty corners followed for the Phoenix and while Singer's attempt was blocked on the first penalty corner, she was able to tally her third goal of the match on the second one as she moved across from left to right in front of the cage and ripped a shot for the goal and a 4-2 Phoenix lead. Mixell would tack on a late goal as the Phoenix cruised to the 5-2 victory.
