Mounties Edge Phoenix in OT


CRESSON, Pa. - The Wilson College men's soccer team lost a tough 1-0 decision on the road at Mount Aloysius College. The host Mounties (6-0-1) netted the only goal of the game in overtime to earn the non-conference win over the Phoenix (2-2-1).

How It Happened: In a match that was even statistically, the Phoenix had a couple of near misses early in the match as senior Jesse Smith (Kingston, Jamaica, Kingston College) ripped a shot that hit the post just over ten minutes into the first half. Just past the midway point of the half, junior Ethan Russ (Honolulu, Hawaii, Radford) took a shot that hit the crossbar and a shot by junior Justin Vizzi (Spotswood, NJ, Spotswood) was saved by the Mounties goalkeeper. The defense by the Phoenix was solid in the half and sophomore goalkeeper Dan Perry (London, England, Okanagan Secondary) saved both of the shot attempts he faced. Neither team was able to get a shot on goal in the second half until the 80th minute when the Mounties fired a shot that Perry saved. Another shot by the Mounties just before the horn sounded to end regulation was corralled by Perry as the teams headed to overtime. Just over five minutes into the overtime period the Mounties gathered a rebound in front and found the back of the net for the game winner.

Inside the Box Score: The Phoenix out shot the Mounties 13-12 and the teams each attempted five corner kicks. Vizzi led the Phoenix with 3 shot attempts with 2 on goal. Senior Effren Amezquita (Xela, Guatemala, Chambersburg) fired the only other shot on goal for the Phoenix. Perry tallied 5 saves in goal.
