Phoenix Drop a Pair on the Road

CHAMBERSBURG, PA. - The Phoenix traveled to Roanoke, Virginia for a non-conference regional tri-match where they competed against Wesleyan College and Hollins University. Both teams defeated the Phoenix. The Wesleyan Wolves won 3-2 and Hollins won 3-0. This moves the Wolves to a 1-0 record on the season and Hollins to a record of 2-0 while the Phoenix move to 0-3.

How It Happened: The first match was against the Wolves. Play remained close and went into five sets with the Phoenix winning the first match 25-19. Wilson college had 14 kills to the Wolves 9 and the two teams matched on errors, each tallying four. The Phoenix also had five aces in the first set. Taking their strong offense into the next set, the Phoenix defeated the Wolves again, this time by a smaller margin of 25-23. The first offensive point for the Phoenix that set came from the hands of freshman Leslie Farnes (Coconut Creek, Fl.) on a service ace, who would score shortly after on an assist from sophomore Laury Jean Baptiste (Fort Lauderdale, Fl.). The set ended with a streak of three kills from freshman Sierra Hill (Hagerstown, Md.) and a service error on the part of Hollins. Set three was a loss for the Phoenix and they were unable to recover with another victorious set, allowing Hollins to win the remaining three sets by narrow margins of 25-23, 25-21, and 15-9 for a final match score of 3-2 Wolves.

The second match against Hollins lasted only three sets. Hollins dominated the first set 25-7 barely allowing the Phoenix a chance to score in the rally. The Phoenix pushed back with more offense in the second set with some crucial kills from sophomore Belen Aldecosea (Miami, Fl.) and junior Hanna Quarry (Elizabethtown, Pa.). Still, the score remained in favor of the hosts and Hollins won 25-15. The Phoenix maintained competitive play in the beginning of the third set tying the score 10-10, but Hollins slowly pulled ahead and took a 25-14 victory.

Inside The Box Score: In the first match against the Wolves the Phoenix had 45 kills against 29 errors on 123 total attempts for a .130 attacking percentage. The Wolves had 48 kills against 19 errors on 116 total attempts for a .250 attacking percentage. The Phoenix, however, had 18 aces to the Wolves 13. Jean-Baptiste led the Phoenix for the match offensively with 12 kills while Farnes had 19 assists. Defensively Quarry held down the Phoenix with 15 digs.

In the second match against Hollins The Phoenix had 12 kills and 12 errors with 74 total attempts for a .000 attack percntage while Hollins had 34 kills, 13 errors and 76 total attempts for a .276 attack percentage. Quarry led the Phoenix in kills and Farnes led again in assists.
