Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Yellow Jackets Sting Phoenix

ASHLAND, Va. - The Wilson College field hockey team hit the road for non-conference action at Randolph-Macon College. A stingy defense by the Yellow Jackets (3-2) held the Phoenix (3-3) at bay for most of the game en route to the 3-1 victory.

How It Happened: The Yellow Jackets put pressure on the Phoenix defense early as the hosts had two penalty corners and six shots in the opening fourteen minutes of action. A goal by Madison McCoy gave the Yellow Jackets a 1-0 lead at the 14:50 mark. The pressure kept coming as the Yellow Jackets put two more shots on goal in the next 90 seconds, but freshman goalkeeper Krista Nayadley (Hampton, VA, Hampton) was able to record saves on both attempts. Freshman Kailey Mixell (Gettysburg, Pa., Gettysburg) fired off the first shot for the Phoenix a few minutes later, but the shot sailed wide. Another goal by the Yellow Jackets a few minutes later put the hosts up 2-0 with less than fifteen minutes left in the half. The Phoenix tried to cut the margin to one as freshman Michaela Singer (Annville, Pa., Annville-Cleona) took a shot right before the half but missed wide and the Phoenix trailed 2-0 at the break. The offense for the Phoenix started to warm-up early in the second half as junior Lauren Moss (Bloomsburg, Pa., Central Columbia) and freshman Jenna Carty (Chambersburg, Pa., Greencastle-Antrim) both tried to get the Phoenix on the board, but both shots missed wide. While the Phoenix defense continued to play strong, the offense finally broke through as sophomore Katie Shank (Waynesboro, Pa., Waynesboro) rattled the back of the cage with an assist from freshman Allison Reber (Narvon, Pa., Garden Spot) to bring the Phoenix within 2-1 with less than eight minutes to go. However, less than 90 seconds later the Yellow Jackets scored for the first time in the second half to increase their lead to 3-1. The Phoenix would not get off another shot as the Yellow Jackets went on for the 3-1 victory.

Inside the Box Score: The Yellow Jackets held a 10-1 advantage in shots on goal and a 5-2 edge in penalty corners. Nayadley collected 7 saves in her first collegiate start. Shank's goal was her first of the season and second of her career.
