Phoenix Bounced by Blazers


FREDERICK, Md. - The Wilson College women's volleyball team traveled to Hood College for a non-conference match-up this evening. The host Blazers (1-11) topped the Phoenix (0-8) 3-0 by scores of 25-17, 25-9, and 25-8.

How It Happened: The Phoenix jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first set on the strength of a kill by sophomore Laury Jean Baptiste (Fort Lauderdale, Fl., Coconut Creek) and an ace by junior Hanna Quarry (Elizabethtown, Pa., Elizabethtown). With the Phoenix holding a 9-6 lead, the Blazers went on a 9-1 run to take a commanding 15-10 edge. A rally by the Phoenix pulled the visitors within 16-13 highlighted by a kill from sophomore Belen Aldecosea (Miami, Fl., Miami Beach). The Phoenix would get no closer in the set as the Blazers closed it out with a 25-17 win. Set two was all Blazers as the hosts ran out to a 13-2 lead and went on for a 25-9 win. During the third set the Blazers jumped out to a 13-1 lead. The Phoenix would get 3 kills from Aldecosea as the team would score six out of eight points to get back within 15-7. However, the Blazers would close out the set by a 25-8 margin as well as the match 3-0.

Inside the Box Score: The Phoenix had 12 kills against 22 errors on 76 attempts for a -.132 attacking percentage, while the Blazers had 31 kills against 10 errors on 83 attempts for a .253 attacking percentage. Aldecosea led the Phoenix with 6 kills while freshman Leslie Farnes (Coconut Creek, Fl., Coral Springs) led the team with 9 assists. Freshman Sierra Hill (Hagerstown, Md., South Hagerstown) tallied 10 digs for the visitors.
