Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Seahawks Blank Phoenix

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Wilson College field hockey team hosted St. Mary's College of Maryland in a non-conference match-up this evening. The visiting Seahawks (2-3) topped the Phoenix (3-2) by a score of 2-0.

How It Happened: The Phoenix had a good opportunity in the 15th minute but shots by freshman Michaela Singer (Annville, Pa., Annville-Cleona) and Senior Miranda Long (Catawissa, Pa., Southern Columbia) were corralled by the Seahawks goalkeeper. With less than nine minutes to go in the half, the Seahawks Courtney Mellon knocked in a shot with an assist from Megan Moore for the 1-0 lead. A goal right before the half by the Seahawks Sydney Cline gave the visitors a 2-0 lead at the break. Early in the second half, the Phoenix had another great opportunity to score as Long gathered a loose ball in the middle but her shot sailed just wide. In the final ten minutes, the Phoenix were unable to take advantage of six penalty corners as the Seahawks would claim the 2-0 win.

Inside the Box Score: The Seahawks held a 7-2 advantage in shots on goal and a 13-9 edge in penalty corners. Long, Singer, and junior Payton Dziemburski (Rising Sun, Md., Rising Sun) took the only Phoenix shots. Freshman Jenna Carty (Chambersburg, Pa., Greencastle-Antrim) recorded a defensive save.

Up Next: Wilson returns to action on Tuesday, September 19 at Randolph Macon College.
