Phoenix Torch Royals for Invite Title

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Wilson College field hockey team faced off against Eastern Mennonite in the championship game of the Wilson College Invitational. The Phoenix (3-1) rolled to a 3-0 victory over the Royals (3-2) to go a perfect 2-0 on the weekend.

How It Happened: In the fifteenth minute, freshman Kailey Mixell (Gettysburg, Pa., Gettysburg) fired a shot towards the cage and the Royals goalkeeper got the save, however Mixell wouldn't be denied as she collected the rebound and ripped a shot into the net for a 1-0 Phoenix lead. During the remainder of the half, the Phoenix defense held strong as the Royals fired off 8 shots but couldn't find the goal. The Royals best chance to score on the afternoon came during a penalty stroke where the Royals Emily Price faced off  with Phoenix senior goalkeeper Kayla Butts (Pasadena, Md., Chesapeake). Price fired the shot, but an outstretched Butts read it perfectly to deny the attempt. Early in the second half, senior Miranda Long (Catawissa, Pa., Southern Columbia) collected a rebound off of her own shot in front of the cage and put it back in for a 2-0 Phoenix advantage. Less than ten minutes later, Long struck again, this time taking a pass from junior Payton Dziemburski (Rising Sun, Md., Rising Sun) and rattling the back of the cage for a 3-0 Phoenix lead. The defense played solid the rest of the match and pitched the shutout as the Phoenix went on for a 3-0 win.

Inside the Box Score: The Phoenix and Royals each took 19 shots, however the Phoenix held a 14-10 edge in shots on goal. The Royals held a 19-9  advantage in penalty corners. Butts collected 10 saves in goal and senior Kallie Butts (Pasadena, Md., Chesapeake) added a defensive save. Freshman Michaela Singer (Annville, Pa., Annville-Cleona) led all players with 6 shots on goal.
