Phoenix Slashed by Cougars in Season Opener

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Wilson College women's volleyball team fell to the Misericordia Cougars 3-0 in non-conference play. Not only was this match the season opener, but it was also the first time these two teams met. The Phoenix are now 0-1 on the season and the Cougars are 1-0.

How it Happened: In the beginning of the first set the Phoenix matched the Cougars tit for tat, but the Cougars pulled ahead. The Phoenix called a timeout when the Cougars got up 15-9 to try to rally for the lead, but the set ended 16-25 in favor of the visiting team. In set two the Cougars established a five point lead quickly. They continued to increase that lead through the end, which gave them a final set score of 25-12 despite the Phoenix's strong efforts on defense. The third set saw push back from the Phoenix and some errors from the Cougars, but the Cougars took still the set 25-14. 

The Phoenix were defeated 3-0 by the Cougars by scores of 25-16, 25-12, and 25-14.

Inside the Box Score: The Phoenix had 7 kills against 15 errors on 58 total attempts for an attacking percentage of -.138. The Ravens had 25 kills against 7 errors on 68 total attempts for a .265 hitting percentage. Freshman Leslie Farnes (Coconut Creek, Fl.), junior Hanna Quarry (Elizabethtown, Pa.), and sophomore Laury Jean Baptiste (Fort Lauderdale, Fl.) each had two kills for the home team. Freshman Sierra Hill (Hagerstown, Md.) led the Phoenix defense with 10 digs. The Cougars and the Phoenix were 4-4 for blocks, and the Phoenix had 3 aces to the Cougars' 11.

Up Next: The Phoenix travel to Roanoke, Virginia tomorrow, Saturday, September 2, to face off against Wesleyan College at noon.
