Field Hockey Dominates in Opener


CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Wilson College field hockey team dominated Notre Dame of Maryland University 5-0 in the season opener this evening. Freshman Michaela Singer (Annville, Pa., Annville-Cleona) led the Phoenix offense with 2 goals in her collegiate debut as the Phoenix out shot the visiting Gators 39-0 for the match. 

How it Happened: The Phoenix dominated from the start, allowing the ball to only cross midfield twice in the first half. Singer rattled the back of the cage with her first collegiate goal at the 12:03 mark of the opening half. Despite having 14 penalty corner opportunities and outshooting the Gators 19-0, the Phoenix only took a 1-0 lead into the break. During the second half, the Phoenix continued their dominance but also found the back of the cage multiple times. Senior Miranda Long (Catawissa, Pa., Southern Columbia) got the scoring going just seven minutes into the half as she scored with an assist from freshman Kailey Mixell (Gettysburg, Pa., Gettysburg) to put the Phoenix up 2-0. Seconds later, Singer knocked in her second goal to push the lead to 3-0. Later in the half junior Lauren Moss (Bloomsburg, Pa., Central Columbia) ripped a shot from the top of the circle and beat the Gator goalie on the left side making the score 4-0. Mixell capped off the scoring for the Phoenix with her first collegiate goal late in the second half giving the Phoenix the 5-0 win.

Inside the Box Score: The Phoenix held a commanding 39-0 shots advantage including a 28-0 shots on goal edge. For the match, the hosts also held a 23-4 advantage in penalty corners. 

Up Next: The Phoenix travel to Salem, Virginia to take on Roanoke College on Wednesday, September 6 for a 7:00 p.m. start.
