Phoenix Slowed by Maroons


SALEM, Va. - The Wilson College field hockey team hit the road for a non-conference match with Roanoke College. The Phoenix (1-1) were topped by the Maroons (3-0) by a final score of 5-0.

How It Happened: The Maroons put on a dominating performance as the hosts controlled possession for most of the match. Wasting no time getting on the scoreboard, the Maroons Fiona Dougan scored with an assist from Lauren Heffron just over six minutes into the contest.  A shot by Phoenix freshman Michaela Singer (Annville, Pa., Annville-Cleona) followed less than a minute later, but the shot was blocked. For the next twenty-seven minutes the Phoenix kept the Maroons off the scoreboard, despite facing 11 shots during that span. However, with fifty-two seconds left in the first half, the hosts tacked on a second goal to take a 2-0 lead at the break. The second half opened with another shot by Singer, but the Maroons goalie came up with the save. The Phoenix would not get off a shot in the half while the Maroons scored three more goals en route to the 5-0 win.

Inside the Box Score: The Maroons held a 32-3 advantage in shots including a 17-2 edge in shots on goal. The hosts also held a 15-0 advantage in penalty corners. Junior Lauren Moss (Bloomsburg, Pa., Central Columbia) was the only other Phoenix to take a shot. Senior Kayla Butts (Pasadena, Md., Chesapeake) allowed 5 goals while recording 12 saves.

Up Next: Wilson will host the Wilson College Invitational this weekend. The tournament participants include Transylvania University, Ferrum College, and Eastern Mennonite University in addition to the Phoenix. The Phoenix open the tournament with Ferrum College on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
