Men's Volleyball Triumphs Over Knights

CHAMBERSBURG, PA. - This evening the Wilson College men's volleyball team played host to Arcadia University in non-conference competition. When these teams met earlier this season the Knights defeated the Phoenix 3-0. This match, the Phoenix (5-13, 2-4 NEAC) defeated the Knights (10-14) by a score of 3-2. The set score was 25-22 Knights for the first set, 25-22 Phoenix for sets two and three, 25-22 Knights for the fourth set and 15-12 Phoenix for set number five.

The Phoenix's first kill came from sophomore Allen Bull (New Freedom, Pa.) followed by a kill from sophomore Zachary McMaster (Gettysburg, Pa.). The Knights took the lead with a five point run and maintained it for a final set score of 25-22. In the second set Wilson ground against the Knights defense to push out a 25-22 win.

The third set started strong for the Phoenix with a kill from freshman Nick Baxter (Denver, Pa.). Baxter then gave the Phoenix another point with a successful block. The Knights caught up to the Phoenix tying the score 6-6. A kill from McMaster gave the Phoenix the lead again, but the Knights continued to tie up the score several more times. A couple kills from Baxter and sophomore Zachary Zerr (Dallastown, Pa) put the Phoenix in the lead 16-13, triggering a time out from the Knights' bench. An ace from Zerr gave the Phoenix a strong start coming back from the time out. The Knights took another time out while the Phoenix were up 24-19, but the set ended in favor of the Phoenix 25-22.

The fourth set was another even match-up, but a service error from the Knights helped put the Phoenix in the lead 10-8. The Phoenix carried the lead to 17-12 before the Knights began to gain. The scored was tied 21-21 before Arcadia took set number four 25-22 over the Phoenix. The first point of the fifth set went to the Phoenix. The teams were neck and neck with a tied score of 8-8 and then 12-12 before the Phoenix pulled ahead of the Knights for a 15-12 victory on the set and a 3-2 victory for the match.

The Phoenix had 39 kills against 25 errors on 128 attempts for an attack percentage of .109. The Knights had 52 kills against 21 errors on 122 attempts for a .254 attack percentage

The Phoenix Offense was led by Nick Baxter with 14 kills followed by sophomore Aaron Hoke (Chambersburg, Pa.) with 11 kills. Freshman Ian Firestone (York, Pa.) had 35 assists and sophomore Evan Hoke (Chambersburg, Pa.) had 11 digs. Baxter had a career high 4 aces in tonight's match.

The Phoenix play next at home versus Penn State Behrend on Thursday, March 9, at 6:00 p.m.
