Phoenix Crush Crusaders

FRONT ROYAL, VA - Today the Wilson College women's basketball team tipped off in non-conference action against the Christendom College Crusaders. The Phoenix (5-17, 2-15 NEAC) defeated the Crusaders (2-6, 0-1) by a score of 41-31.

The Crusaders had the first four points, but a three-pointer from sophomore Jordyn Day (Richmond, Va) sliced into the Phoenix deficit early on. Scoring was low in the first quarter and the trend continued into the second. Scoring belonged to the Crusaders for the first part of the second quarter with a 6-0 run. But a defensive rebound from freshman Kristen Burdo (Norristown, Pa.) helped set up a lay-up for Day. After a steal from sophomore Ashley Henderson (Upper Marlboro, Md.), Day hit another lay-up to add to the Phoenix's total. Henderson's second steal of the quarter gave her an opportunity for a lay-up of her own putting the score at 14-16 Crusaders to close out the half.

The Crusaders' Elizabeth Ford sunk a three-pointer to start out the third quarter. Sophomore Lindsey Purvis (Fort Myers, Fl) then got on the scoreboard with a lay-up. Henderson stole the ball again, this time from Kate Wilson, and took it to the rim for a lay-up. Scoring was at its highest in the fourth quarter, with a couple lay-ups from Day and a three-pointer from sophomore Amber Watkins contributing to the tally. The Phoenix outscored the Crusaders 15-8 in the fourth quarter solidifying the lead they had gained in the third and giving them a 41-31 victory over the hosting Crusaders.

Day led the Phoenix offense with 16 points followed by Henderson with 9 points and a season-high 9 steals. 

The Phoenix move up to 5-17 overall on the season. The team returns to action at home this Saturday, February 11 against Keuka College with a 1:00 p.m. tip.
