Phoenix Slashed by Wolves

CHAMBERSBURG, PA - Today the Wilson College women's basketball team hosted NEAC opponent Keuka College. The Wolves (11-9, 8-7 NEAC) won by a score of 68-47.

The Phoenix (5-18, 2-16 NEAC) took the lead in the first quarter. The first bucket for the Phoenix came from freshman Kristen Burdo (Norristown, Pa.), a jump shot in the paint assisted by sophomore Amber Watkins (Honesdale, Pa). The Phoenix continued scoring for a 10-0 run that included two buckets for sophomore Lindsey Purvis (Fort Myers, Fl) and a three-pointer from sophomore Jordyn Day (Richmond, Va). A jumper from the Wolves' Sam Larenjo broke the run for the Phoenix. But Purvis made a steal and Watkins took a jumper to put the Phoenix up 12-5. Purvis then hit a lay-up that gave the Phoenix a 16-9 lead at the end of the first quarter. Burdo was first again to score from the field for the Phoenix with a jumper. The Phoenix maintained the lead until the 3:32 mark of the second quarter when a jumper from the Wolves' Katie Stuart tied the game up 20-20.The Wolves pulled ahead and the half closed out with them in the lead a close 28-24.

The Wolves offense gained momentum in the third quarter outscoring the Phoenix 25-6. The fourth quarter saw more balanced scoring at 15-17, but the Phoenix did not gain back the lead. A turnover from Wolves' Britta Berguson gave Watkins the opportunity to land a jump shot from inside the paint to put the Phoenix 34-59 behind the Wolves. Burdo made another jumper with 3:44 left on the clock but the Phoenix still trailed 61-38. Day sailed another three-pointer in the net. Then Courtney Boyea got a jump shot for the Wolves with only 7 seconds to go. Senior Teniera Prioleau (Baltimore, Md. ) launched a three-pointer as the buzzer sounded giving the Phoenix the last basket of the game that ended in favor of the visiting Wolves 68-47.

The Phoenix move to 5-18 overall in the season and 2-16 in the conference. The Wolves move to 11-9 overall and 8-7 in the NEAC.

Both Purvis and Day had 10 points each for the Phoenix offense. The Phoenix shot 31.1% from the field and the Wolves 45.6%.

The Phoenix return to action tomorrow Sunday, February 12 on their home court versus Wells College at 12:00 p.m.
